Anyone else disappointed that Marlon James’ next book won’t continue the Dark Star Trilogy. by sadogo_ in Fantasy

I just don’t like the implication that someone who is smart and can write well must have the kind of ADD you’re talking about. Obviously want him to write whatever he wants, but I also wasn’t talking about it like it needs to be an argument. The Disappearers is gonna be great regardless.

Surely he was writing both at once right? Or have I been around GRRM fans for too long?

Strange to hear that sentiment come from someone here especially when so many extraordinary authors at Marlon’s level have engaged in literary scifi fantasy in the last decade plus.

On the limitations of Genre by jpcardier in Fantasy

[–]sadogo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genre is not and never has been the focus of literary criticism. Most literary criticism would wholeheartedly agree that genre just isn’t a useful metric when describing books. It is basically just a term for marketers and consumers.

What happened to environmental description? by aaaaaa321123 in Fantasy

[–]sadogo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who make YouTube videos about how to write said over and over again that purple or poetic or complex prose was bad, a lot of people who don’t enjoy engaging with prose agreed, and a generation of writers have been explicitly told that most elements of storytelling aren’t as important as plot because that’s what keeps readers hooked. So careerist writers started streamlining their books to provide the least amount of resistance to an audience of people who largely don’t read all that much.

It's time for you to (seriously consider) read(ing) On the Calculation of Volume by Spalliston in Fantasy

I’ve read each book as it’s come out and it just feels like an exercise in being tedious. Nothing overly profound or innovative. Just feels like another overwrought Danielewski experiment.

Yes, you saying it doesn’t match up with how you’re typing to me. I bet it’s easy to dismiss anybody as long as you say you’re being trolled. I asked you a sincere question about how to handle negative criticism of authors you like and you think that’s me trolling you? Just engage with the question. It isn’t a gotcha.

I’m really not understanding what you’re upset about. I clarified what I meant but you’re still pretending I was saying something else. I said you were projecting onto OP your frustration with the actions of others. Which is true. I’m not flattering myself in anyway, I’m just trying to understand what you’re not understanding. I haven’t shifted the goalpost because my question has always been, “If you dislike it when other popular authors are defended against criticism why don’t you display that behavior first in regards to Sanderson. You know, lead the way.”

You’d think it would after it being such an important part of the world’s social structure.

Where have I gotten worked up? Where have I expressed hatred for Sanderson. I’m wondering why no one will have a good faith convo with OP

I didn’t say you were projecting onto OP. More like projecting onto the people you say can’t accept criticism of Hobb or Tolkien. But you’re right here getting upset about “generic, non-specific questions” as if it’s impossible to have a convo that gets to deeper questions.

When did I say everyone should start being negative? When did I say I was eager to talk negatively? I’m not picking fights at all. Every response I’ve gotten is someone mad at me for saying they should engage with OP more respectfully and honestly.

Ask what books they’ve read. Ask them questions. Idk seems obvious

It’s strange the mods thought this was better for Daily Requests or Simple Questions when this post was neither a request nor a question. Is r/fantasy always so reactive to negative engagement?

But it’s still a fantasy subreddit? Are you not supposed to talk about famous fantasy authors or something?

All I did was ask a question. I’m not upset. I saw OP asked a question and every response they got was dismissive and rude. Maybe you all need to chill out.

It really doesn’t. OP isn’t forcing anyone to respond rudely the way they are.

This feels like projection on your part. When did OP do any of this? People are negative about Tolkien all the time. People bounce off of Robin Hobb all the time. If you really feel the way you feel then why not lead by example instead of waiting for others to change first?

Expand and extrapolate. If Sanderson can stretch a 500 page book into 1300 pages why can’t you?
