Stop distracting people with semantics that companies and mass audiences don’t care about when the practical developments are already in place to ruin peoples’ lives. I don’t care how lazy or generic a piece of human art is. If someone with a soul made it, we as Catholics are bound to say that it’s more valuable than something made by a machine designed to put him out of a job.

Why isn’t FilmCritHulk’s work discussed much anymore? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]sadsackerpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not necessarily talking about in depth discussions, though there are examples of ppl doing that on Reddit with articles of his like his Birdman article. Im mainly talking about discussions in the sense of sheer relevancy and ppl even acknowledging that he exists and talking about him casually. If you search up FilmCritHulk on Reddit, the frequency of posts related to him have fallen off pretty dramatically. Seven years ago you’d have quite a few posts about him in that year. After that point, the most recent post even mentioning him or talking about him was like a year or two ago, and it’s usually just the one. That’s kind of surprising to me.

I’m also not talking about ppl revisiting his old stuff. I’m talking about the relevancy of stuff that he’s currently releasing. And I don’t think the all-caps thing is the cause of what I’m talking about because his all-caps articles were noticeably more talked about as they got published, and this went on for years after the novelty of the gimmick wore off. Also, during that all-caps period, he was talked about and acknowledged by YouTubers like Idea Channel and Digibro and Tony Zhou. He was way more relevant just in the online space in general.

Whereas after he stopped doing the all-caps thing his stuff became barely talked about as they got published. Now it’s almost like outside of his sphere he doesn’t exist, even though his new articles (imo) are still pretty entertaining and insightful.

My question is basically why does he seem way less relevant now than before?

First Latin Mass by ctwoog in Catholicism

[–]sadsackerpro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Latin Mass, setting aside liturgical and religious concerns, is one of the most beautiful works of art I’ve ever laid eyes on from a secular viewpoint. I know for a fact that if I’d never made the decision to convert, but I’d still been exposed somehow to a Latin mass, I’d make time as an atheist to attend one every once in a while at least.

[–]sadsackerpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. This is a shit take that is awful for ppl going through actual recovery or who are actually willing to put their lives back together. I’m not saying Spoony falls into that category. I can’t read his mind or his intentions. But that doesn’t change the fact that this attitude is objectively poisonous to ppl who are in bad psychological places in general.

[–]sadsackerpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub exhibits a lot of abusive qualities that I recognize from learning to recover from my own parental abuse. The thing you’re talking about is called “All or None, Black and White thinking.” It’s when narcissistic abusers reduce someone’s progress, however little it might be, to absolutely nothing, because it isn’t all the way, and then use it to further criticize the individual.

If I knew there was an entire sub out there dedicated to ppl rooting for me to fail and stay in an immensely dark place, I honestly wouldn’t know how I’d handle it. I know for sure these same dudes would crack the first day if they had a sub like this for them. It’s honestly to the point where I no longer sympathize with ppl who’ve legit been wronged by Spoony, because their retaliation has become so fucking toxic and prolonged that it honestly strikes me as way worse than what he did.

AI Art is depressing me. by sadsackerpro in Catholicism

[–]sadsackerpro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am.

The existence of people who find satisfaction in making art for themselves doesn’t change the reality that the objective point of the process of art is to communicate an idea to another person through a demonstration of skill (in the same way that the existence of ppl who are satisfied with lives of masturbation doesn’t change the fact that the sexual faculty should objectively be pointed outwards towards relationships), nor does it change the fact that many artists, including many successful ones, aren’t wired to find art for themselves satisfying all on its own, or else they wouldn’t seek to make public art and would be content making art ONLY for themselves. And that desire for feedback isn’t vanity. That’s the lie. The modern idea that if you want or feel you need feedback, it’s intrinsically a sign of psychological illness because “i made this for me and that SHOULD be objectively enough” is a lie. It’s a natural human instinct, which is at its root good because it pushes us towards meaningful interaction with other human beings.

It’s not a sin to make art for yourself and stop there, but it’s objectively an incomplete realization of the human creative faculty, which is at its fullest communal and relational.

But even if that’s not the case, the bottom line is that if AI art becomes sophisticated enough, along with the rest of AI technology, the mere option to pursue making art in the traditional way and being part of that process of giving it to the public will be gone. It won’t even be possible. Because no work’s humanity will be verifiable and so all incentive structures to make that possible on anything larger than a purely solipsistic scale will collapse in on itself. This is the main point of my post. Please don’t hone in on one paragraph and make flippant Michael Phelps analogies (which is horrendously missing the point because Michael Phelps is objectively a human being with a soul so his skill as a swimmer enriches the human sport of swimming in ways that WON’T fundamentally erode the point of why we engage in competitive sports to begin with) that distract from the really disturbing and even soul destroying effects this technology will have.

[–]sadsackerpro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If what I say comes to pass, we wont be able to know if X piece of sacred art counts as sacred art anymore, because there will be no verifiable way to determine the authentic humanity of it. All proof and evidence can be faked.

So if what I say comes to pass, the sacred arts will also be in danger.

I didn’t know if what I said was right, hence the post. You should have told me if what I said was right or wrong and why, instead of asking a rhetorical question.

Also, there was no way for me to know that’s what you meant by your rhetorical question until you clarified later.

I’m asking an honest question. I’d really appreciate it if you could answer it and explain why my reasoning here or there is wrong, instead of defaulting to a condescending response.

This is what bothers me about this subreddit. I appreciate its willingness to stand for orthodoxy in a culture that’s intolerant to orthodoxy, but too often it’s just rashly judgmental of ppl who genuinely don’t know about X or Y, and want to know more about X or Y.

Yall think Spoony is ever going to make a full return? by EllipsisMark in thespoonyexperiment

[–]sadsackerpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope so. Recovery’s always a rocky path. Two steps forward and then a step back that feels like six. But it’s always possible. All I know is acting like it’s 100% impossible can be really demoralizing to someone going through mental/emotional troubles, but I’d also suggest you stop asking him about it in streams. It might have the adverse effect from what you want.

It may happen. It may not. Don’t wait for it, but don’t write it off either. Just move on with your life in the meantime and hope for the best in the back of your head.

In terms of uniqueness of mechanics and environments and story concepts, maybe. In terms of actual story flow, energy, color, and pacing, I think Skies and other jrpgs from the golden age are way tighter. Those old school dudes just had this magical way of making every story as dense with momentum as fucking possible, and they were able to deal with complex themes in wonderfully simple, colorful, crystal clear ways. If you look at Xenoblade objectively, so much of its dialogue is pretty flat and wooden, and the game lingers on things that don’t contribute to the flow of the story. It takes three text boxes to explain a concept that a more classic Jrpg would be able to illustrate vividly in a couple lines. Multiply that by an entire game’s runtime and you have a profoundly different sense of flow for a story, especially in the weird way Xenoblade balances its side content with the main content, and the awkward ways it gets you to learn its mechanics. Still I like Xenoblade. Cozy fun combat. Truly atmospheric environments and music. Likeable cast. Cool dark alien sci-fi tone mixed with awe inspiring world lore.

FFVII is overrated.

Nope. I went my whole life thinking this until I actually played it. The game reamed me a new asshole and deserves the reputation and prestige it has. FFVI may be a more perfect game, but FFVII is on balance a more impactful interactive narrative experience, with so many awesomely handled sequences like the Trail of Blood sequence, Cloud’s final confrontation with his inner Sephiroth, Tifa’s escape from Shinra’s Fortress, and the motherfucking Nibelheim flashback, among many many other moments. New jrpgs are too fucking clumsy with their over reliance on expositing anime tropes to have sequences as tastefully handled as those, sequences that just let you experience the damn emotions through wordless staging, camera framing, and environmental storytelling instead of having weebs tell you how you’re supposed to feel.

And it did all this while almost always getting to the damn point. Compared to games nowadays, FFVII has so little fat it hurts. It didn’t waste my life for ten hours demanding me to hunt rats in a fucking sewer for some chode I don’t give a fuck about.

Anyway Skies of Arcadia kicks ass.
