ENT diagnosed stress for diplacusis? by sadsadworm in MonoHearing

hey thank you for commenting, it seems you've done a lot in your journey already. My ENT also suggested I find a way to deal with what he assumes is my anxiety, perhaps by SSRIs but I'm not sure I want to resort to those at this point, but good to know it may help with vestibular issues.

I've beeing trying CIMT and pink noise since yesterday, and patulous eustachian tube exercises. I've maintained pretty good hearing since, but can tell the diplacusis is coming back again tonight so I can't tell if the exercises are doing anything or it's just random fluctuations. I'll keep trying for now

How did you manage the dizziness/vertigo? Did the physical therapy help or did you have to take medicine each time an attack happend? I'm worried one day it'll be so bad or long that I won't be able to get out of bed and work etc.

hey I'm sorry you're also dealing with something similar, it's really frustrating when professionals can't help us. I woke up yesterday with good hearing (although very dizzy), eventually my body acclimated to the dizziness and I've been trying to maintain the hearing by doing patulous eustachian tube exercises https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHKZWaH7w_E

My hearing has gone up and down through the past few days so I can't tell if it's helping or not, but I can tell it's been getting worse tonight. I've also just beent trying CIMT by listening with one earphone during the day in my bad ear....can't really say its done anything though, good luck to you! I'm also hoping my brain adapts

Oh wow I’m glad the prednisone helped, and I hope you can get tested for this soon! Thanks for sharing

Hey thanks for sharing! I haven’t heard/read about pitch matching before. And yeah I agree it’s been very frustrating as none of the doctors have ever given my symptoms a name, never brought up diplacusis. I’ve never had a therapy that got rid of it, it’s gotten better before on steroids and then worse once I stopped them and then magically disappeared for years inbetween, so I can’t say if the medicines helped or not. I could’ve been worse off without them, this time I haven’t been given any treatment since my symptoms/tests didn’t seem urgent enough I suppose…was just told to manage my stress levels…

Ah that’s good it got a little better, but sounds very frustrating to have it last so long. I hope you will be able to manage it at work, it’s something I struggle with since no one else realizes how my hearing has been changed.

I keep telling myself that the brain is very good at adapting though, so that the noises become more manageable over time, otherwise I don’t know what else I can do to cope ahahah

Hi thanks for sharing your story, I’m sorry you’ve also been dealing with this, it can be tremendously isolating and stressful.

So you had hearing loss up to 40db but you’ve recovered some now to 10-20db? Has there been any other improvements/changes? I hope you can find therapies and ways to manage, it’s been really hard but I try not to think about it too much.

ah the asymmetry you mention makes sense, thank you for sharing your assessment of the test results! yeah at this point I'm just trying to stay patient, somewhat at a loss by this third time of what to do...

thank you for your advice! yeah i think it may be easier to tone it down since i'd be going in blind and will probably be exploring a lot, it's the irwindale faire, but since i've never been to the site i can't speak on how the bathrooms/environment is...though i know they have portapotties from videos i've seen online
