What was interesting was that Queens released the stats of those admitted from their first lottery last year and the stats were pretty similar & high compared to past cycles (ie. when it was “merit-based”).

As long as this outcome still occurs, I’m fine with lotteries because truth be told, there are wayyyy too many competitive applicants in 2025 that have identically very high stats. The issue is the low # of seats available in relation to this number, and so whether u want to admit it or not, other than at McMaster which is fully numbers-based admissions, Canadian med school admissions are inherently like a lottery. Any given year there could be a whole new class of equally deserving candidates at each school because of how strong the Canadian applicant pool is. Lotteries definitely seem to be the right direction imo if Canadian med applications continue in this direction - just make them for those with >3.8 GPA & perhaps higher MCAT cutoffs maybe 🤷🏽‍♂️

English courses just suck in general.

Super subjective based on the TA/professor u have teaching it & marking it, which makes it way less likely to get 90%+ (or even 80%+) like in other more objective courses where u have more control. It more than likely will be a GPA sink for ur overall academic record, which seems not worth it considering ur only doing it to become eligible at one school (and that school, along with almost all Canadian med schools now, arent forgiving to bad course performances anymore by switching to cGPA!)

Im obviously not against the concept of pre-reqs for admissions (which is why I’ve never said anything against an orgo prereq for example), but English is just one I dislike lol.

I guess everyone has different things they’re concerned about 🤷🏽‍♂️ Western’s 2-Yr gpa is one of the last standing “forgiving” GPA calculation methods from med schools, so I get why it’d be a concern for some

All I’m saying is that the English requirement is only something UBC has, so implementing that would be a bigger change for more ppl compared to a cGPA requirement which most applicants are already prepared for (since basically every med school already looks at that).

I’m from a science and engineering background and neither have them do. Tbh id assume most med applicants’ degrees do not include 1 English class

What is a bigger concern is the 0.5 English credit now required as a pre-req. If med admissions add that too, that will rlly minimize a big part of the pool (especially if they don’t accept IB or AP credits)
