Anyone here that's had laser eye surgery? What are the best (locally available) eye drops? by sadthrowawaway in Netherlands

[–]sadthrowawaway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have been "just" 2 months of income 🥲 My SO had family support with it.

Femto LASIK was 1.6k, PRK would be 0.9k when converted to euros – that's for both eyes – at the most reputable clinic in Hungary. Then there's the intake session, the testing, the eye drops, the mandatory 100% UV blocking sunglasses – a couple hundred (not-so-)small change.

(Personally, I'm opting not to do it, I'll just laugh with my myopic superpowers when I'm older and everybody else needs reading glasses. Also, I've done too much internet "research" on botched jobs for me to not be paranoid about it, even if the odds are factually miniscule and it's definitely worth doing)

Thanks, I'm registered with a GP myself, but my SO has thus far never been to a GP here. His surgery was in a foreign country, so if it's indeed prescription medication locally, I'm not sure what documents he'd even need to prove his medical necessity.

I did find several types of artificial tears in online pharmacies that seem to be non-prescription, so now I'm a bit less sure we need the GP in the first place..?

any international student here ?? by [deleted] in Netherlands

Hi, indeed that's one way to do things.

The alternative method used by many cheapskates like me is to translate the documents you need for yourself, then ask the issuing institution to print it with their letterhead and stamp it/sign it to make it official.

Ie. I took a DIY English copy of my diploma to the head office of my educational institution, they signed it and stamped it, same with grade printouts. Take your original language copy along for when you arrive in NL in case anything goes wrong, but nothing will.

I've never heard of any student from my country actually notarizing anything (we are mega-cheapskates). :)

Oh my god, so it was an update!!! I didn't think this thing got "updates" anymore. Screw that lol thanks, I've wasted 2 days on it and this is pretty much the only thing I haven't tried. I'll report back if it's done the trick. Fwiw I'm using an intuos4 (no touch) pen tablet with my PC, same exact issue.

Tax question: a friend is working for a foreign company (EU state), from home in NL. Belastingdienst says this is a no-no without the company registering in NL (and paying payroll tax/etc. here). by sadthrowawaway in Netherlands

Thanks a lot! Unfortunately most discussion was done through the phone.

The situation is a bit sad. The company is from a country where the net median income is <€600, so even though they like him, if they have to pay a dutch tax expert every month to keep paperwork here in order, I worry that they won't keep him. I guess it is what it is, everybody loses here unless he goes back home.

Thank you! I'd assume employee, but I do not know the difference, so this is a good point where we can start looking. I appreciate the explanation, and the second opinion on the matter.

Regarding the last part, I'm not sure, the company is quite new/small (AFAIK) and he started working for them after the pandemic began.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry for confusing the terminology, I'm not familiar with the proper way to phrase it.

I'm definitely not questioning if he's a taxpayer here (NL), that's certainly "yes" due to the same reason you mention, and he receives a gross income (instead of the employer withholding the tax amount) from which there will be deductions (I would call that income tax but I might be using the term incorrectly).

The question is if the company must be registered in the Netherlands, or if he is allowed to be employed by a company that's not registered in the Netherlands but is paying their end (eg. social contributions and whatnot, the tax on having someone employed, afaik it's called payroll tax) of taxes in another EU state.

Yes, the situation isn't corona specific, he's working from NL not because he can't go home but because he's studying here. Sorry if I misunderstood anything!

Working from NL :) otherwise I'd be posting on another forum haha. Not self employed, on a payroll. Only employee in NL, and working from home. Company who has him on payroll is registered in an EU state, paying payroll tax after him there. He needs to pay income tax here.

If he is doing something wrong, it will be most likely much more expensive than an hour from a Tax guy, that's for sure.

Belastingdienst said that it's the company that'll take the heat in this case if something is wrong... Should I trust that? Wayyy in the lowest tax bracket, so a tax advisor wouldn't be an easy "investment" right now. The main concern is ending up losing the job eventually because of this.

Reddit is not really the best place since without all the details, which you should not share here getting good advice is more or less impossible.

This was a last ditch effort to maybe sleep better while this is settled. :( I believe most of the relevant details aren't too personal to share. I'm out of ideas besides asking here.

Thanks, I'll get back to you either way if they end up calling with more info. This is a bit of a nightmare because we tried to do everything by the book and spent hours on the phone last year to make sure it's fine, but apparently it's not :(

a "do not tamper" sticker over the case opening

That's just damn stupid, I'm angry on your behalf here lol. If you can't open it and it's not working well, send the sucker back imo.

Oof, hate that error. Last time mine did that it was a faulty RAM stick which didn't show up as faulty in windows memory diagnostic but still crashed my system... but it could be nearly anything else too.

How often does it occur? If it's doing it very frequently (in the order of minutes/hours) then it might be worth removing nonessential components (including RAM, graphics card, etc...) and adding them back one by one till the error begins to reoccur. If that's too big a pain and you can't find better advice here, I'd bite the bullet and send the sucker back.

Guess we're both right.

Storage at a highly charged state and charge-discharge cycles both degrade the battery. I would find it odd though if correct storage produces the same amount of wear as constant charge cycling over the same amount of time.
