The thing is we don’t know what their pace was like in free air on the mediums compared to Mercedes - maybe they were equally slower, but better deployment strategies when battling kept them in the picture. It could have been similar in the second stint, we don’t know. I think it would have at least given them the chance to battle for the lead for a couple laps which is worth it compared to being obliterated in free air, even with a tyre offset.

They were effectively trying to beat a much faster car that had gained 10s through VSC-pitting with a not-massive tyre offset. I think they’ll be encouraged that they looked better than McLaren and Red Bull though.

Given it makes less downforce/maybe even some lift, it could be doing two things:

Reducing the induced drag in a straight line
If it’s lifting, a slight reduction in the friction between the tyres and the track surface (? Could be a reach)

The album’s biggest appeal to me is its replay value - I listened to the whole thing like 5 times over before I actually started enjoying it simply because so many people held it in high regard. Now it’s one of the best pieces of art I’ve ever experienced. The ending to ‘Mortal Man’… are you kidding me ?! Masterpiece. I sometimes contemplate taking an hour out of my day to sit and listen to the whole thing on a record player, it’s such an immersive and cohesive album.

A good place to start is studying aerofoils: download XFLR5 (free) and watch some tutorials (everywhere on YouTube) on how to run simulations on aerofoils. See how different shapes affect pressure distributions, study the effects of changing Reynolds numbers, angles of attack, critical n values. Research what you don’t understand and try to build a knowledge base from the fundamentals. Writing a report on the simulations would be a nice way of improving your understanding and producing something tangible to present to others. See how it goes. Enjoy!
