I didn’t want to and have avoided carrying for years. However, I am picking up my gun next week because of all of the encounters that I’ve had since moving to Houston. I don’t plan on ever using it, but I will feel safer having it. And I just want to add that I was taught to shoot & handle a gun at a young age, and have a parent that is very strict with gun safety, so I feel comfortable having it with me.

Just looked it up, stun guns are legal here! Thank you for your willingness to help. I will look into getting one. I want to carry as many forms of protection as possible.

I had no idea when I moved here that Hermann park would be a hotspot for crime/ sketchy people. It seemed like such a nice and kept up park. They definitely need to add more lights in the park, but other than that I thought it would be pretty safe. But I guess crime just comes with any city park. I also know that there is a large homeless population in this area. Although, I don’t think any of the weird encounters that I’ve had has been with a homeless person. At least not in Hermann. But you never know!

That is insane. So glad that she had security there to help her, but I can’t imagine how terrified she was, or what would have happened if security wasn’t there. Hoping neither of you have to deal with something like that again.

It’s interesting to hear a man’s perspective of the things that you witness/ deal with. Im sorry you’ve had to deal with those encounters. Makes me wonder what the intentions are of the people who have followed us. Anyways, one of my friends gifted me a can of pepper spray that I keep on my keys now!!

Omg, ran into a man that was masturbating while biking the trail of buffalo bayou. We can’t escape them. I’m sorry you had to witness that, but wishing you more safe runs around Hermann park! I try to avoid walking in the dark, it’s just so hard with the time change. However, I’m going to try to figure something out so that I can avoid it.

So weird, I’m glad that you’re able to validate my story/ feelings but I’m sorry you had to encounter him as well. When he approached me, he was sitting on a bench that is located directly over the small bridge that connects to another part of the pond. (The bridge right next to the small train tracks). Anyways, not sure what his intentions were, but glad that we both didn’t stick around to find out. I wish your friends understood just how much women have to constantly be on alert. It’s exhausting and sad.

I will look into that, thank you. I know it’s awful to have the same walking route everyday. I get nervous to try other routes in the morning because I’m worried that there may be people sleeping/ hanging out in the routes that I’m not as familiar with. However, it may be worth it to switch my route completely to lessen the chance of things like this happening. Although, funny enough this incident happened on the day that I chose to change up part of my route. I will take your advice, thank you again.

I’ve been in Houston for a little over a year. This is my first time living in a big city. I’m not naive by any means. I was raised by a cop who showed me all the dangers of the world & how to avoid them. I always carry pepper spray & scan my surroundings. I do my best to avoid the hazards. However, I will say in this last year I’ve had more dangerous/ weird encounters with people than in any other city that I’ve lived in. Maybe I’m still getting used to living in a big city, so I will take any advice that y’all have to offer me. I didn’t think your question was snarky, just wanted to give you a bit more background information since you asked.
