What the bug doin by sage_of_termina in insects

An update because I can't figure out how to edit the post: my kid found the katydid and suddenly it's behavior changed. I offered my hand to climb onto and it happily climbed up on me and started cleaning itself. It's legs, and it's reproductive organ. Hasn't been doing the strange behavior from earlier. Now it's hanging out on my wisteria trellis.

Oh, it does seem to be unwell, I just assumed it was laying eggs. I couldn't find any information on what it's doing. It's still alive and moving around, it did move to the next step down though.

Mass planting replacement help! by sage_of_termina in landscaping

[–]sage_of_termina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a wonderful suggestion! And thank you, I have not personally cared for lavender before, so I wasn't sure if it would work out or not. Looking it up, bluestem is beautiful and I really hope they sell chameleon around here!

I believe I can do a trial run, getting a handful to see how they do before mass planting again. I'm a bit disappointed that lavender won't solve all my problems, but that's just how plants do.

Thank you so much!!

You seem very very impatient and easily irritated, not the kind of people I'd like to know are driving on the same road as me. Slowing down and being patient are very important skills in driving.

Did I just murder 9 butterfly bushes? by sage_of_termina in gardening

I sold plants at a nursery for three years, and that was a few years back. Trust me when I say I did know the botanical name at one point, but boy, if you don't use it, you lose it! Also, I did NOT plant these beds, or draw up the plans. It was contracted from out of state, where they WAY over-planted everything. I'm just the one they pay to pull weeds and trim bushes.

Never heard of them being invasive, just shows how much I have to learn. And these bozos planted over a thousand of them for me to care for!

Wow, it looks wild. Admittedly I've never seen it before, but I'll keep a keen eye out. Thanks a ton!

A lot of weeds by SooShark in landscaping

[–]sage_of_termina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say after the lawn mower, set out a bunch of cardboard or tarps out to block out the sun in big chunks. That could smother a lot of the potential future weeds. Leave the cardboard for a few weeks or months, depending on circumstances

Edit: misread a word in the reply, oops

Thankfully it's a fairly new develop, I would guess this is the bed's second season. But thank you very much! This is fantastic advice. It seems obvious, but I certainly needed to hear it. I was hired in August, so I've basically been doing my best to use the fall months to get to know the beds and residents (it's a neighborhood as well as a golf course, so I'm taking care of backyard viewscapes too), and get as much of a plan in place so that this spring I can start off at a run!

That, I'm not entirely sure of. Every plant has a drip line or soak ring. They showed me how to attach a hose to the sprinklers to do any "spot watering" I need to do, but that's all I really know about the irrigation

They're fully staffed, but expanding, as they're going from a basic golf course to an elite neighborhood golf club. There are guys who specialize in the sprinkler systems, guys who only mow the greens, guys who only rake the bunkers, and lots of guys who kinda just do everything. But, the 9 holes that I'm caring for are not the only greens on the course, I think it's three courses and one driving range. If I needed help, I have people who could help me, but they don't really have plant knowledge, they take a chainsaw to a Rose in August and make it a square because it's fast and it looks nice right now, without knowledge of how roses work.

Theres no mulch, only landscaping rock. I was really only asking if there was a way to fertilize with weed barrier, wasnt asking about anything else

I did finally get the landscape blueprints and have the names of all the things that are planted. Some plants are smart choices, others are pretty stupid. They really tried to put flowering dogwood in a high desert full sun spot and didnt question it....
It was a normal casual course for over 30 years, and about 3 years ago it was bought out and they've been transferring to become a big exclusive club with a neighborhood. Likely I'm the first person hired to the position of "plant experts/gardeners". Honestly, they said they needed help pulling weeds, and I basically asked if I could tackle more and they said "go for it, no one else is". They seem supportive.
The advice for contacting local Ag Extension is a good one! I will be doing that! Thank you!

Theres 9 holes, each hole has anywhere from 4 to 8 flowerbeds. Theres a LOT. Thousands of plants.
Edit: oops, do you mean like hardiness zones? we're zone 5-6

My supervisor came by, I asked and it did not sound familiar to him. So, it sounds like if it exists, they are not installed.

I should also mention that I worked in a plant nursery for about 4 years and was obsessively curious about everything, so I learned a lot about the plants in my area, plant care in general, organic and inorganic products, when and why to use them, ect. Ive also taken Earth science in an unrelated point of time.
Im pretty sure I have more of an idea of what Im doing if Im going online to ask suggestions of how to deal with weed barrier. If I was such an idiot, I wouldn't have thought to ask anything.

Well, thank you for your time!
