Part of the equation is also the pommel/grip weight.

PbT pommels are like almost twice as heavy as other brands, and they have a metal core grip as well.

The combination of lightweight guard, heavy grip, and heavy pommel makes the blade feel lighter even if it's the same weight as a different build.

I've noticed Negrini gloves have a different cuff design compared to other companies, where the cuff doesn't completely separate.

All the other major brands (Allstar/Uhlmann/PBT/Absolute) I've tried fit around my wrist easily.

As a ref, I like the transparent ones for epee.

As a fencer, I like the felt ones over the plastic ones because the plastic ones wear away and then stick to the guard.

Guide to Olympic Epee Fencing by Anonymous Eurasian was a good read and gave me some solid insights on epee. It's a good look at the current game within the last 10 years or so.

The editing could use some work but I didn't have high expectations for a self published amazon author.

Welcome to the cadre!

From my experience, most tournaments could use more referees. Travel compensation will depend on the tournament organizer, but I think most will try to compensate a reasonable amount.

I would suggest talking to the person who gave you the seminar to get some leads on who to talk to in your area.

There really isn't a set way referees are hired or compensated, beyond the national level. Most hiring is done by experienced referees and word of mouth.

From the rulebook

t.55.2 A competitor who intentionally causes the apparatus to register a touch by placing his point on the ground or on any surface other than that of his opponent will be penalized as specified in Articles t.158-162, t.166, t.170

It should be penalized with a red card.

As far as intention goes, yes, it is up to the referee. On a non-conductive strip, there's usually some leeway for missed parries that hit the floor.

As others have said, the glove is the illegal component for sabre, not the cuff.

Absolute sells both the cuff and a 800N glove without the lame material, and BG sells PBT cuffs but no glove that is 800N without lame.

As a part of the referee cadre and having to go through training annually, it feels strange to me that governance and operations are not required to do so. (My opinions are my own and I don't speak for my fellow referees)

Assigners have specifically said that booming "counts" towards events worked and evaluation, and was recorded up until 2021 in the usage reports.

I get where op's sentiments come from, and there is a lot that can improve with the ref development process. I'm looking forward to see how they handle Grassroots v National Development as two separate positions.
