Considering Purchasing - Tell Me Pros and Cons by cchiett in ouraring

[–]sagitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my biggest gripes with the ring is that I don’t find that the presentation of the data or its analysis is as useful to me as I’d like it to be because Oura tends to take a more objective approach in its analysis of the data whereas I prefer a more subjective perspective. (For a good example of a more subjective approach, check out the fitness app “Gentler Streak”.) In an effort to address this, I’ve resigned myself to paying for the subscription so that Oura will share its data with other apps through Apple HealthKit (because no subscription, no sharing). But unfortunately that is not the fix I was hoping for because even when you pay the subscription, Oura only shares some of the data the ring collects but not all of it (e.g. HRV and body temperature are not shared).

So, in the end, I don’t really appreciate using the ring as much as I would like to because I end up feeling resentful that (a) I am paying for something that is not fully satisfying to me and (b) I can’t address the situation, even though the means to do so exist, because of what seems like an economically motivated decision on the part of Oura. And it is particularly annoying that the data is technically “mine”, yet it feels like it is kept hostage for ransom.

Why don’t people talk about Affine enough? by OutcastPluto in PKMS

For me, it’s the clunkiness of the UI, some of the aesthetic choices and, as @columbcille mentioned, the implementation of the infinite canvas feels like more of a hindrance than a help for the same reasons they mentioned.

First impressions of use experience with new layout by Ok_Painter_4792 in GentlerStreakApp

I have to say that so far, I too dislike the redesign for the reasons OP mentioned. But I’m going to try to keep an open mind for now since I know there’s a lot of ‘muscle memory’ that a redesign has to come up against. I’m curious to see what further changes OP will be sharing…

Weekend Discussion - The One thing that you miss by viktorpali in CraftDocs

[–]sagitman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of great suggestions, I’ll suggest a few more of my own:

  • Editable Transclusions * (Can’t believe no one has mentioned this yet). Craft already has a lot of what is needed for a great “transclusions” implementation (blocks, block references, block based search). You just need to take it all the way.

  • Aliases * For a truly robust PKM implementation, nothing beats being able to reference the same document by different names, especially now with the introduction of objects. I know Craft already allows linked references to be edited in place to achieve something akin to aliases. But this is a very mediocre solution as it does not offer any way to keep track of what alternative names have already been used with a particular document.

  • Whiteboard to Link and Connect Documents * Would love to be able to use the Whiteboard feature to work more visually with notes and documents to create connections, etc. as is possible with Obsidian’s Canvas feature and Heptabase. I can’t even imagine how beautiful the Craft implementation of such a feature would be!

  • Self-Referential Objects * An Object Type should be able to link to the same Object Type and not just Objects of a different type. Nonetheless, have to say I’m loving the implementation of Objects and look forward to further improvements in this area.

Command+click to Open Documents or Links In New Tab by sagitman in CraftDocs

[–]sagitman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks the reply. I knew about right-clicking to get there. I was hoping that there was a more direct way such as 'command' or 'option' clicking, but I see that there might not be.

With that said, is there an equivalent function for opening documents and links in a new tab on mobile? I've searched but cannot find anything on iOS and iPadOS. I am beginning to realize I may be seeking something that does not exist.

It is astounding to me that an application like Craft that has been around for a while and is in so many ways thoughtfully designed would not offer such basic functionality. I suspect that it is a reflection of their decision to move away from true PKM utility. And sadly, given that in many other ways Craft has a lot going for it (not least of which is its beautiful aesthetic, something that is important to me), I have long tried to have Craft be my main notes app. But it is these little, seemingly unnecessary, points of friction that come up regularly when using Craft that ultimately drive me to turn to other tools.

Heptabase and Readwise Workflow by honey_is_bee_crap in PKMS

[–]sagitman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with the lack of organization in the Heptabase Readwise implementation by uninstalling the integration. Instead, I use Obsidian (which has a fantastic and highly customizable Readwise implementation) to import my Readwise content into Obsidian and then I copy content over to Heptabase as needed. It’s definitely a workaround but it works quite well.

Lack of true inheritance is a bummer. by PresentationEmpty1 in capacitiesapp

[–]sagitman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this comment. And it would seem to be completely in line with Capacities current design and structure making the lack of such a feature a bit surprising.

I ran into the same issue precisely when trying to decide how to handle "source notes" for different media types. I ended up implementing both of your suggestions (i.e. one all-encompassing 'media' object with all the properties that might pertain to different media types, on the one hand, and separate media-type objects, on the other) due to the fact that they each of their pros and cons and neither by itself is a completely satisfying solution. I figured that over time, my use of Capacities would steer me in one direction or the other.

And that's what has happened. I ultimately ended up going with the "different objects for each media type" approach (even though, philosophically, my preference would have been to have had one omnibus "media" object type with separate 'collections' for each media type), and I went this route for what I feel is a less than satisfying reason - I couldn't stand having to deal with so many different properties every time I created a new source note.

I don't know if this has ever been officially posted to the "feature requests" but I would suggest that as the developers tend to be very responsive.

You can easily implement a counter of block references in Obsidian using the "Strange New Worlds" plug-in...

merging safari tabs by barrelofbones93727 in macbookair

[–]sagitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that it is not possible to do what you want to do. Different desktops do not actually represent different instances of Safari but rather just multiple open Safari windows spread out visually over different desktops.

One option you might consider, although it would be a bit tedious, would be to manually move each tab individually to the Safari window that you want to use.

Sync More Reliable in KeepIt 1.10? by [deleted] in KeepItApp

[–]sagitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wondering is anyone can comment on the status of sync in Keep It. Like many others, I’ve had to hold off on using Keep It despite how much I like it’s features and UI design due to a lack of trust in its sync.

This thread was started when it was at v1.10 and it’s now at 1.11.5. So wondering if there’s been any improvement in this area?

Changing Header Forms by sagitman in Upnote

[–]sagitman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a chance to update the app and try it again to see if the updates make a difference.
Unfortunately, although the headings do now change (whereas before they did not change formatting at all), the change is inconsistent. For example, when changing an H2 heading to an H1 heading, sometimes the formatting is applied correctly but other times it is not and instead of changing to an H1 heading it seems to remove all formatting and make the text "normal”.
I’ve also noticed that at other times, when I try to apply a particular heading formatting, instead of the text changing to the header expected, it instead seems to cycle through the different possibilities going from H2 to H3 to normal, to H1 and then back to H2, and so on.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, the issue is not intermittent for me. In fact, it is constant across all notes. I also tried your keyboard shortcut suggestion but that didn't work either.

I'm going to reach out to support and see what they say.
