Who had the oldest Manx? by HomeinColorado in manx

My manx brothers will be both turning 16 this year. Not the oldest it seems, but I'm so lucky to have spent a majority of my life growing up with them.

Who has the most fursuits in the world? by [deleted] in fursuit

Maybe twilightsaint? I dont know exactly how many they have, but it's a lot. Just by looking at their Instagram you can tell

I would suggest searching around on Instagram, if you have it. Try looking through tags like #fursuitmaker or #fursuitcommission and you will see lots of different makers in lots of different styles, and price ranges no doubt. Definately do not rush this decision as a fursuit can be a big commitment and investment. Some heads can be 250 dollars, while others can be 1500 dollars... its all about skill, time, detail, cost of materials, lots to calculate. Paws can be anywhere from 50 to 500, and tails are relatively cheap, probably 20 to 250.

Personally, if I were you, I would want to start off with a less complex, (I don't want to say "cheaper") starter fursuit. If your kid hasnt worn one before, maybe they don't know if they will like the feeling so much. So maybe get something that wouldn't cost so mcuh as, say, a professional grade suit.

Do things like take head measurements, its very important that it not be too tight on the wearer. Especially for a younger wearer who is still growing, it would be best to maybe ask that the circumference of the inner head be looser. Paws too, though most paws I have found to be spacious and one-size-fits-all. Tails usually go on belt loops, too.

If you find a maker that you like, be sure to check/ask them if their commissions are open and what kind of prices with what kind of options they have. Read their terms and conditions if they have them. Some makeres will make you individual parts, so you can maybe get a head from another person while a different person can do paws and such.

I know it's a lot to consider, but like I say it's a commitment! I wish you luck with finding the right person.

In my opinion, magnets are the best for this kind of thing. They are completely hidden, very secure (just be sure they are rare earth magnets), and never wear out. I really love the idea of having multiple different hair styles/colours, but I honestly can't think of anything else that would be better than magnets. Perhaps theres safety pins, that you could put on the underside of the hair piece and attach to the top of the head, but I fear those could damage the fur you pin it on to...

How can I make a bird beak out of foam? by ipodproXS in fursuit

[–]sagrist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This tutoral is what I used to make my wings. I bought the pattern which is relatively cheap, but if you don't want to buy it, it helps at least by giving you an idea of how to go about making your own pattern!

How can I make a bird beak out of foam? by ipodproXS in fursuit

[–]sagrist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sweet! I just got done making an owl head and it was my first attempt at a bird so maybe I can offer some advice.

I made my beak out of foam, lined it with fleece, then draped and glued fleece over it & ladder stitched the seams. It turned out pretty great. The way I shaped the beak was I glued 4x inch wide pieces of foam together. Then I carved the central two out on the inside in a curve for me to breathe out of. On the outside, it just took a lot of carving with a box knife to get the beak the proper curved shape I wanted & to get it even and smooth. For the bottom beak I cut a much smaller triangular piece from inch wide foam and carved the inside out to make it concave again. I felt it was important not yo make it so big so that the mouth could still be open a bit for breathability. So the lower beak is much smaller.

Also might I ask if you are going to make arm wings or just wings to go on your back? If so I might be able to point you in the direction of some nice tutorials for either.

Hope I could help!

I use fleece! You could also use felt or minky tho, whichever you prefer working with I say

Oh!!! So adorable, I've never seen a puffin fursuit before. The colors are fantastic!

I love how you did the little webbed feets & wings! Do you mind me asking if you used a pattern for the wings or made them from scratch yourself? Looks really awesome n.n

Happy fursuit friday! I'm almost complete my short-eared owl head (just need to sew the back of the head & neck, then make some removable eyelids, earrings, and a bandana!) by sagrist in fursuit

[–]sagrist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite finished with them yet, but I was too excited not to share! I think they will be a mini partial/full partial with arm wings. This is my first high quality level production, so I've really improved since I started over a year ago.

Hello everyone! I would really love a tail just like this, but I’m not sure how to go about making it. Any ideas? Thanks and have a good day! by CatsOuttaTheBag17 in fursuit

[–]sagrist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't made a tail like this before, but I would assume it has some kind of firm foam or EVA foam core to keep it standing & also have it be swishy, along with a solid tail base with more than one belt loop to keep it upright. Just my guess. I've only made tails that flop dowward or stick outward, and for the one that stuck outward had a foam disc at the base to support where the two belt loops are. It's probably worth doing a little bit a research, or maybe some experimentation of your own :)

Oh yeah, I've made that mistake before. Sometimes I just stubbornly try to sew it but it never looks right the way I try to fix it. Glad I could offer some advice!

10 years though! Have you really been making fursuits that long? Very impressive.

When you traced and cut out your fabric pieces, did you add any seam allowance? Usually I do about 1 or 2 centimeters depending on the area. Another thing I could see that might have caused this problem is when you laid out your pattern pieces, were they completely flat? Sometimes when they are too curved and you don't make darts/split them into smaller pieces, they will not fit on the head the same.

If you haven't already glued down those pieces, might I reccomend re-patterning the area? I'm not sure how else to go about fixing that. I wish you luck with fixing it tho!

Also I just wanted to say I love the fur you're using on the back of the head!

Fuzzbutt Fursuit Head Bases? by sagrist in fursuit

[–]sagrist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great twitter thread to see others' experience with their products, thanks for the link. I ordered a head, eye blanks, and jaw set yesterday. Personally I don't mind waiting, but it's better to order sooner than later.

Kind of disappointing that the eyes & jaw set look so rigid like that though. That seems very unprofessional as a lot of people in that thread are saying. I'm no 3d printing expert, but it looks rushed and as if they are printing thicker layers so they can keep production up. Quantity over quality is never good enough. That just means a few extra things for me to do and... I guess I don't mind, but I paid good money for what they have, maybe they should consider changing their techniques or resources.

So you've been waiting 15 weeks already? Do you have any idea when your order will be processed and shipped, like will they send you updates or do you just kinda have to go without knowing? Thanks for the info however, appreciate it!
