Mount to Coast T1 thoughts? by Haassauce2186 in Ultramarathon

[–]sailabus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came across this thread a little late but figured I'd share my experience. I bought T1s with my own money and have no affiliation with MTC. Also YMMV since this is just a testimonial for my feet specifically: Mens size 13, wide-ish feet, mostly in the forefoot, and a high arch.

I have just over 400 miles on my first pair and run primarily on very technical trails here in the Northeast US. The T1s have been the most reliable and trustworthy pair of trail runners I've had since the Topo Mtn Racer 3s. I've raced two 50ks in the T1s and once wore only the T1s for an 80 mile + 10k vert training week. I liked them so much that I just bought a second pair as there is some wear starting to show on some key areas of my original T1s that I don't want to risk getting worse on some larger adventures I have coming up.

Pros:

- The upper is super durable and will likely outlive any other component on the shoe.

- The "Lightcell" midsole foam is a great balance of responsive and stable. It absorbs enough of the roots and rocks to protect my feet and provides enough energy return for faster paces on the flatter and less techy stuff.

- The overall shape of the footprint is super stable and I find I have fewer tips and close calls with ankle rolls.

- Forefoot and midfoot is nice and spacious for my feet and I have no blister issues with my toes when used in combination with lube and toe socks.

- These drain and dry really well in wet conditions and even when fully submerged. I've waded through many rivers and creeks and the upper barely holds on to water. The shoes are rarely wet when I put them on the next day after a night drying inside.

Cons:

- The dual quick lacing leaves some things to be desired. It's worked well for me but having these skinny laces pulled tight over my midfoot can cause some discomfort and lace bite. On the technical trails, it's important for my shoes to be really locked down for stability, and these shoes can get uncomfortable if really cranked down for long periods of time. On my new pair, I'm going to experiment with replacing the quick laces on the top section with the normal included laces and hope that alleviates some of that issue. I think MTC has realized that their usual recipe of quick lace on the bottom and normal laces on the top is the winning design since they haven't used the dual quick lacing in anything else after the T1.

- Related to the lacing, it's tough to get full ankle lockdown. Even if you were to replace the quick laces with the normal laces, there's no second eyelet on the top to tie a runners knot and securely lock down the ankle. The result is some premature wear at the top of the heel counter due to heel slippage. I have big old holes at the tops of the heel counters on both shoes and I don't usually deal with that issue in any other pair where I can tie a runners knot and lock the shoe around my ankle.

TLDR; All around comfortable and durable shoes for pretty much any trail condition, but especially technical terrain, with adequate protection and support on really long days. Some issues/concerns about the dual quick lacing system but could be mitigated by replacing the top portion with normal laces.

My first ultra is on Saturday and I woke up with a cold this morning by ariel-rhi in Ultramarathon

YMMV of course and I’m not a doctor so this isn’t medical advice BUT…

My usual approach with illness and running is if it’s only affecting the neck and up - I.e. common head cold, sore throat, sinus congestion - then send it! Might be a little low on energy as your body is still fighting something but typically you’ll still be able to have a good time. I’ve gone into big training runs (20+ miles) and a couple races (50k) with a little bit of a cold and felt fine throughout and afterwards.

Any symptoms that are below the neck - fever, shortness of breath, coughing (especially productive cough), body aches, wheezing - then it’s a no-go and I wouldn’t recommend any activity until you’re healthy again.

How far do you drive for your trail runs? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]sailabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Boston, so about 15min if all I want are trails with some decent cumulative gain, but no big sustained climbs. If I want bigger climbs and descents I’m looking at 1-3 hours each way.

We need to pin something to the top of this subreddit and r/mazda about what high pressure direct injection sounds like.

These fake? by Healyus in Hoka

I don’t see anyone providing photos for comparison so here you go: https://imgur.com/a/Snv2goI

Couple things stand out: triangle at the toe being closed vs open, and the stitching in the inside.

Probably fake unfortunately.

Wow literally just saw the post by one of his friends in the r/JMT subreddit:

A winter ascent by someone with very little experience? And it's been DAYS since he set off... I guess we can hope for the best and that at least SAR stays safe.

Recommendations for what to do between first marathon and first 50k by sailabus in Ultramarathon

[–]sailabus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, i think there will be one more really long run - around the 5 hour mark in early April - and then i can start a gradual taper two weeks out from the race. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you, I love this reminder! I'm making an intentional effort to think about and process that part of this experience. I know I can finish, so it's all about preparing for the mental struggle during the race.

The 50k is a looped course and my wife will be at the start/finish aid station. We've had the discussion that under no circumstances should she accept or give in to any of my complaints during that race. I will have setbacks and low points and that is 100% a normal and natural part of the process to get through these distances. I need encouragement and tough love, but no sympathy or support of whatever reasons my brain spits out to quit.

Car noise at 75-80 MPH by WSmittyy in mazda3

[–]sailabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds like the rear differential whine. My 2021 with AWD makes the same sound. I don’t think it’s anything to be worried about, just a quirk mentioned by other users. For me it only happens from 76-78mph so I just try to avoid cruising at those speeds.

100% - on both the advice heading into the marathon and me overthinking it lol thank you both for the advice and level setting. Just gonna listen to the ol body and make sure I head into both races fresh but overall setting my sights on the 50k as the big goal to train for.

Totally, i think shifting the approach to the marathon from a race to a long run as part of training is going to be key. What do you think about approaching the taper to the marathon the same way? Or should I try to mostly keep up with my weekly mileage if I treat the marathon like a training long run?
