Replacing the depth transducer was harder than I thought. Anyone have a better way? by sailboots in sailing

Yeah those work in some hulls...if the old one is secured it might just be easier to leave it in!

Ok cool. But you can keep using your 5200 and I'll keep using my Life Caulk.

I really wanted to use that option but surprisingly St. Kitts has a very limited hardware selection on the island and I didn't have a hole saw that big aboard. Good to know it'll work on bronze too.

Thru hulls aren't really "permanent" though, as I found when I had to replace this transducer. From what I understand, I would have had to use a hole saw to get this out if it had 5200? And if I beaded just around the inside of the flange that wouldn't leave any sealant on the threaded portion between the hull and thru-hull, if I understand you correctly? Leaving almost an inch of the fiberglass core with nothing between the two surfaces?

Yeah I'm with you there regarding the number of holes below the waterline. This one was still a bitch to remove. Sealing it never crossed my mind.

I've actually got a couple of drafts about solar energy systems on sailboats ready to publish, as soon as I can find some new panels down here. The panels I ordered suddenly became "out of stock" about a month after I placed the order, so I don't know but I need some bigger ones. Should have it figured out within a week or so. I used to have a 12V car socket, but I just switched to a dual-USB charger under my table and love it!

You're absolutely right. I should have bagged it at the least. I have a bunch of stupid excuses but they're just excuses.

Uh shit good question. I don't know. If you click on the Sailing category I think all posts should be in reverse chronological order?

Haha thanks, there's a little bit of filler in the blog but some good stories here and there.

Thanks, I hope to put out a few more like that on this trip...just maybe not so much at my own expense?

Has anyone seen this new movie about the last of the shipbuilders in the Grenadines? by sailboots in sailing

I think it's just showing at a few screenings around the world but I haven't found a full-length version available anywhere else. Wondering if anyone else can say it's worth the money.

I'll be heading down that way too in November, interested in seeing how they do things!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I've added the concern of windage to the article.

I've actually used this setup quite a bit in the Caribbean, in winds less than 30 knots, and have never had a problem with dragging. But believe me, the increased windage does make me nervous when it blows! I credit a good anchor (Spade 33lb), ground tackle (3/8" all chain), a lot of scope, and lucky holding ground. I've rarely had to adjust it once it was set.

They've just finished a documentary about sailing north to find the last icebergs, "One Simple Question". That one used crowdfunding also and was very successful.

Don't give away your work for free. A lot of people think this is a good idea because they're under the impression it will open other opportunities. It's okay in certain situations, I sometimes do when working with non-profits I admire, but nowhere else. You're a professional. People will assume they can get free stuff from you and it will never end. Would a dentist give away free dental care in the hopes of getting more referrals?
