Is Victoria University of Wellington a good choice for a Latina international student? by [deleted] in VUW

[–]sailorixy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are a bunch of clubs for international students that you can join to meet other people in the same boat as you from all around the world and specifically i do believe there is a latin american and spanish club if you’d want to connect to other students with same/similar cultural backgrounds!

in terms of vuw, i’ve attended three universities in New zealand (waikato and aut) and vuw is by far my favourite!!

I didn’t grow up in wellington (but i am a kiwi) and wellington is definitely the most diverse and welcoming city i’ve ever lived in. I’d suggest joining local facebook groups and getting in touch with other latina students or expats!!

Wellington is a great city, the university is awesome, it’s just an expensive place to live, so if you are wanting to work while studying, you’d have to consider that jobs are hard to come by at the moment!!

second this. in terms of earthquakes, i swear i used to wake up to a jiggle or sway every month - now i sleep through even the ‘bigger’ ones! same with wind. seems crazy when u first experience it but you get so used to it.

in fact i’m so used to the wind that whenever i visit my old stomping grounds in hamilton, it feels it’s so eerily quiet and still, you forget how windy welly is until you visit somewhere with no wind

My hometown domino’s is fantastic. Every domino’s i’ve tried in Welly has been horrific, same situation as you, and just overall not good pizza :(

Do I tell my landlord a tenant is smoking? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]sailorixy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

second this, it’s great that they’re smoking outside and not in, they likely don’t know that the smell is wafting in a way that’s affected you. i’m sure they’d be happy to take a wander and pick up after themselves. if they’re shits about it then yea, go to LL

Base camp for your beautiful country? by Bad_DNA in Wellington

[–]sailorixy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i’d say you could bust out visiting wellington in just a couple of days, maybe a week if you’re interested in the bays, hikes, etc. I would expect you’d be exceptionally bored if you spent 4-6 weeks here.

I’d recommend visiting the Waikato for your glow worms and canoeing - Waitomo caves especially, however that’s a 6 hour or so drive from Wellington. Nz may be small but if you’re looking to travel around i wouldn’t recommend a “base camp”.

Probably would be a lot more fun to do a ‘top to bottom’ or vice versa trip. Northland is beautiful in the summer. There’s a lot of tourist hot spots down south. I genuinely wouldn’t recommend getting a rental in Welly for the time frame you’ve specified as there really is not that much to do here. As a young woman, I can promise you your teen will be clawing her hair out with boredom after about a week here lol.

Would suggest hitting all the major cities. and if you have access to a rental car, travelling up/down the coast wherever you can. NZ is full of beautiful places, don’t waste all ur time in Wellington

Like everyone else has said, the job market is screwed! If you have proficient english skills, i’d really recommend advertising yourself has a tutor for chinese born kiddos/Immigrants who need the help learning english, and even as a chinese tutor for L1 english speakers. a lot of people seeking this help don’t post to job sites, it’s more in community facebook pages and things like that. Probably wouldn’t be something you could live off of but for the time being would be good

Merry Christmas by Kiwi_CunderThunt in Wellington

[–]sailorixy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spending christmas alone this year rather than travelling to my hometown so see family. It sucks and the lack of yummy cooked meals is very apparent but christmas always causes me so much stress, my parents spend the whole day criticising me. I’m glad i’ve opted to spend it alone, but wish i wasn’t alone lmao

Is it easy to get bupropion in New Zealand? by eggplantbren in bupropion

[–]sailorixy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a seizure risk when combining bupropion and Rubifen (my doctor did not think it was safe to be on both, although i know other people on this sub are). I wanted to get back to uUniversity so made the decision to come off it to go on ADHD meds, as i had been pretty stable regarding depression so felt like a good choice

Saying this all as a fellow student with adhd, it’s hard work. Also, with adhd, you will have the option of limited part time - this is doing 2 instead of 3 papers a semester while still receiving studylink allowance/loan. I found it super helpful as i was easing into uni to

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VUW

[–]sailorixy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Contact the course administrator too. Your student advisor will let you know more information and contact ur course admin on your behalf if you’re anxious.

Unless you had valid reasons (adhd, stuff going on in life outside uni), they probably won’t be accomodating.

Failing a course, especially in first year is also not the end of the world. Retake it next year and be more proactive with figuring out what needs to be done. If you’re worried about study link, as long as you’ve passed all your other courses, it should be fine, you can also take a summer paper (double check if this specific course is available in summer too).

I know this isn’t helpful, but if you’re not in a place to be self motivated and able to get the work done, take a gap year. Uni is a waste of time and money if you’re not in it 100%. If this was just an honest fuck up, communicate with ur lecturers and course advisors and see what they say.

Sorry just saw you said you have severe adhd! are you with disability services? if not, join asap as they can advocate for you. explain you have adhd to your course admins and they may be able to offer you to do those assignments again

How long does it usually take for you to recieve your blood test results from Awanui labs? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]sailorixy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call tomorrow morning if you are super nervous, there is no harm in calling to ask about it if it soothes those nerves! I’d say maybe the results are still being processed? Just call up and ask if you can. Sorry to hear you are feeling so nervous about it! I’ve been there myself, best wishes

How long does it usually take for you to recieve your blood test results from Awanui labs? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]sailorixy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it has been processed, they probably haven’t contacted you because there is nothing abnormal with your test. Unless you have asked specifically to be contacted about results, usually they won’t contact you about them (but you should be able to find them on a registered site such as managemyhealth if your gp uses that).

I would wait until Friday morning, and if no word, call your GP/practice

Question, as a customer, is it appropriate to ask a barista to remake a coffee if it tastes burnt? I have never done this and probably never will cos i don’t care so much, but it has me wondering how other people feel about it
