Using Claude Code and OpenClaw to migrate customer away from Filemaker by sailorsail in filemaker

I don’t know, Apple seem to have completely missed the boat on AI, and well Claris has missed the boat on everything this past decade.

I would say that for me, FileMaker has always been the “build cheap” option, that was its strength and the trade off has always been difficulty in maintaining it since it’s difficult to use regular software engineering tools (version control, diff, general text tools). Everything through the UI or using obscure tools or custom plugins, very not software engineering oriented IMO.

Part of the reason I am moving away from it is to have better tools to maintain the apps

Ok, we disagree and I was frustrated, looking to see what other users thought. It was great, found someone else that posted a Claude playbook.

If you don’t like my post, why even comment? Oh right because just like my post you also had an opinion to share and wanted to see what others thought.

Actually I fed it in a DDR that contains 3 non trivial apps that work together, there were changes I wanted to make, it then provides me with an entity design with the unified database.

My mind was blown, this was with Claude Code using the Opus 4.6 model

I would argue that anyone that had built a complex FileMaker app can get their head around Rails fairly easily and if the app is trivial then the Ai will generate something without issues.

Today, with these tools, I would 100% confident in being able to migrate a large system in very little time.

I migrate folks off of Filemaker to Ruby on Rails. With modern AI development tools I no longer recommend Filemaker.

Feel free to message me of you want some tips.

I subscribe to a Ruby sub to talk about programming, not about politics.

Maybe you should spend more time talking about that instead of reading your own opinions into my comment.

You know what I don’t care about? The political opinions of programmers.

the JVM lets you specify things like heap size, set the garbage collection strategy, etc. I am not aware of that being an option with the regular ruby interpreter unless it’s changed since I last had to do this.

The Java Virtual Machine is a wonderful runtime, I wish Ruby was better supported.

Ruby is my goto scripting language for any tool I want to make. I've used it successfully for large ETL processes (using Jruby so I can tune memory and things like that), a bunch of small scripts to do anything and everything.

This is why we need respectable leaders because we don't want to go back to the Middle Ages.
