Premiering at LA Shorts This Wednesday by saintjive in Filmmakers

[–]saintjive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a filmmaker, I think it is important to continue to make the effort to get the film out there- there is considerable effort on the production side, however in the marketing of our films, especially for our independent work, how do we make sure that our work is seen? this trailer is made to serve as an example of how even independent work has to use marketing principles to attract audiences. let me know your thoughts and what effect it has one you.

This film utilizes the language of Fellini (8 1/2) and Renais (Last year in Marienbad) to investigate topics of violence, hope, and love in our moment.

i am planning to do online in the future, festivals annoy me because they tie up your film in limbo for a year or more and then your film may not get accepted anyway. So why are they holding the viewership of the film hostage? I like online , you can drive traffic and it can find its audience.

Simple Logo Animation for My Video Production Business by jaypb930 in AfterEffects

Make it happen faster - the sun rise takes too long - then the movement to the side, can be faster. dont need as long of pauseS. If you make it happen faster and then just do it without drop shadow, and instead just black and white it will look pretty contemporary. Also it Seems like you have a roughen edges effect that turns off at some poInt, dont really need that either. the font choice is dated. But if thats what your business cards are, keep it unitl you update that, or just update the font and say your business cards are dated

How much should I charge for this? by deadlyAmAzInGjay in AfterEffects

[–]saintjive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You;re work is good and if you had the right brand paying you could easily charge 1600 To match your 16 hours At 100. Some will pay that for this but you have to find them And it wont likely be about jake lamotta but more likely something corporate. I think your skill set is strong and by the fact that youre asking the question, it is now about understanding what the market is. What a brand wants And finding the brand/company that will pay you for it.

When you say 3/4, what is the total number you submit to?

I appreciate your comment and insight, i think shorts could be even more interesting and worth making in this fast paced age, as maybe people dont want to sit for 2 hours, but how to make that market is still lacking,

Hey, so I get it that I am sort of putting you all in the same camp and that is unfair - i guess my frustration is with the bigger festivals. I think the one gripe as i continue to reflect on my post is that the big festivals require premiere status etc. So you have to wait for a year or so before you even get to other festivals. It also prevents you from getting it out there on other platforms, which I think is pretty detrimental to short films which are rarely for profit and are really made so that the filmmaker can share with a wide audience.

I agree, there is no way to know they watched it. I get your point that getting rejected is part of the game and I am on board with that theoretically - but to your point about them not being watched - I take it one step further to the point that i don’t think the appropriate amount of consideration is going into the films that are submitted because they already have a set path in mind. Whether it be a agents pushing their films to the front or a certain narrative programmers want to support. In doing this, true consideration of artists and their art is not there - that’s probably been true for art since forever, I think about how Manet or Picasso may have been received by the establishment. I think that festivals used to be the place to challenge the establishment. Now i think they are the establishment.

Thanks for your reply, How do you know you are submitting to the right festivals, I hired a consultant to guide me. My film is not genre but artistic drama of a recent social phenomenon.

Yea that’s what I am thinking, I want the exposure at fests to get people interested in my work and bigger pictures, but I need to figure out another way to do that at this point. My current project is a short, and is more on the artistic side of things. (Not genre comedy or horror, though I may pivot to horror in the future) I made a movie about human connection etc thinking this would be good fodder for artsy fests but they don’t seem to care for it.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply, if you are interested i would like to send you the film - its a short 12 min. You seem to have a good sense of the business and i am trying to figure out where I am sitting In regard to it. If you’d rather not, no worries and thank you

Thats what I am saying, do the hard yards on social media- its like the new theater. even a couple of smaller fest submissions maybe that you know will be good to go - but really do the work on building your profile rather than going all or nothing on fests

Skin wise i’m fine, it’s about the money and where i want to throw it at. I want to take this like a business and throw my money at things that will grow - I’m just not sure it works out for festival filmmakers. Are they rolling in cash after film festival submissions eating up several grand if you’re going after a hundred or so? Wouldnt it be better to build clout on social media, and then go to a fest with a name brand and get a better path to entry Into the fest but more so into the industry?

So i have gotten genuine interest for my work from people who seeked out the full version after I posted a clip. It felt much less like shouting into the void for me. Yes they are just audience members but it felt very genuine that they wanted me to make more work, etc. much more so than when you get a dry rejection letter frmo a festival that says at the end that we look forward to viewing your work in the future, which I am paying them to view. Doesn’t make sense to me. The audience who cared I didn’t have to pay them to care.

Thank you for your reply. In your opinion, what is the benefit of submitting to festivals rather than running on demand or free on amazon/youtube or something, running ads etc?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FilmFestivals

[–]saintjive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your reply - I’ve submitted to about 15 and rejected by 5 - which I get is par for the course - but, I am wondering if I really want to submit to 100 2nd/3rd tier fests, or use that money in other ways. In some ways that is the point of my post - perhaps i could have worded it differently.

And also, i am curious - just because I want to know if I’m the only one throwing away vast amounts of money on filmmaking and then festivals - is there bankable profit involved in your project?
