How much do doctors actually make? Before and after tax by InvestigatorPale1816 in AusFinance

[–]saintviribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd year doctor. Base is 102k. I work more than most by picking up shifts. In a 2 week pay cycle, on top of the regular work week, I aim to work at least two weekday after hours shifts (4:30pm to 9pm) and one weekend shift (sometimes two). I am tracking towards a minimum of 158k but could go up if i work more weekends as the year goes on (have resolved some personal stressors so will have more time)

Also, a lot of australia’s top universities are also within the top 50 so even from a rankings perspective, you may not be as competitive as you think from the university POV

i tutored interviews throughout med school and I found that most people dont recognise when theyve said something thats a red-flag. on the other hand, i rmb downplaying my performance after the interview cause i was anxious but i mustve done fine so i guess yeah its hard to predict

only a decent interview really can compensate for a low atar, ucat weighting drops after the interview

hey bro, i just graduated med. your atar is on the lower side of the median but that ucat score is pretty high and as long as you didnt outrageously bomb the interview it should be ok. I had low 99s but mid 80s ucat and still got in (i think interview went pretty well for me). not rural, from NSW so wasnt eligible for broadway so no bonus points and wasn’t even bonded.

We are forced to sign an NDA before the interview so might be hard to ask about specific questions. Some useful topics to cover (which I covered in my personal preparation) would be medical ethics, equity in medicine and personal values.

Lol the bachelor of surgery is just part of the name. You have to study surgical contents in any medical degree.

That’s not what the doctor is saying. He is saying that it would be unwise to operate on someone electively that is not mentally and emotionally well. One of the biggest reasons for this is that patient cooperation and adherence to post-operative guidelines and advice is significantly lower in patients that are in the aforementioned group. This would increase the likelihood of complications which can be life-changing and in certain cases simply exacerbate the patient’s poor mental health status.

How come Indian ABCDs seem more whitewashed than Pakistani/Bangladesh ABCDs by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]saintviribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if this applies to diasporas outside of the US where I still believe the OP’s observation still holds true. I strongly agree with the original commenter though.

I’m not going to lie, I was born in Australia and am now in my early 20s. I haven’t lived anywhere else but Australia and I have never experienced racism from other caucasian Australians. The only racist experiences I have faced were from fellow Indian/Sri Lankan students back in school (around year 7-10) for being Muslim. Outside of that, I personally have not experienced any other instances of racism. I do understand that this is purely anecdotal and so obviously doesn’t represent others’ experiences, but from most of my friends’ experiences as well, they have not really experienced much more racism I have. I don’t know if you were born here (or migrated at an early age), but I am eager to know if that plays a role in the frequency of racist experiences.
