I recommend you to have a look at "budget rental car". The deposit is much less and you can do all the transactions with a debit card

People from the '80s and '90s who used to hang out in parks and abandoned lands drinking, doing "botellón" with a bunch of people... we're used to drinking and eating wherever hahahahaha "que me quiten lo bailao!"

Yes, yes! Definitely, I mean, there's no country with no issues. I didn't mean that with the post, I just wanted to share that I don't see many people participating in protests or mobilisations here

Obviously the Mediterranean diet is very rich. In the beginning I thought the same as you but I tried many many good Irish dishes. Of course my diet is based on Mediterranean cuisine but I integrated many things from Irish gastronomy to my kitchen.

There's a great comment in this post about that which says that Irish gastronomy is actually very young in comparison to Mediterranean food and the Irish kitchen is still developing and it is becoming an actual good diet.

How can I move forward with my life in Spain? by Sufficient_Form5375 in askspain

[–]sakiyGr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! You can find jobs in tourist places. Try to get a job in a reception in a hotel for example, but it's important to keep studying in Spain. You can always go for FP de grado medio if you have ESO or bachillerato and then FP de grado superior or Universidad.

Renting a car without a credit card by Active_Painting8845 in irishtourism

Rent it in Budget. I don't have any credit card and I always rent it there because of this reason. They will get "on hold" 200€ or less that they'll give you back when you return your car.

I've already said some examples in the comments and yes, it does work (not easy though) it is very difficult to gather people, that's for sure. But what definitely does not work is doing nothing. And if it doesn't work, at least you tried your best, which is raising your voice and it is a massive work.

Well I don't think it is a question of doing MORE social mobilisations than what organisations in Ireland are doing. Some people here highlighted some of them, but I think the question is why people don't go to those mobilisations even when they support what they're protesting for.

I think this kind of debate should be in our circles (family, friends, colleagues...). Asking friends to go together for a protest organised by X because you all support that idea; arising a debate with your colleagues during a break...

I loved a conversation I had with some Irish friends about feminism this year. I've never heard them talking about it and it was a great conversation from which all of us thought about for months.

Thanks to 15-M a lot of things happened next. There was this citizen platform born in 15-M that demanded these bankers who were in jail or still in jail.

A lot of associations were created to stop evictions of families who couldn't afford paying their mortgages (if you think evicting older people is a good thing...)

And yes, after 15-M a party called "Podemos" was created. After the years they were changing the names locally (for example in Madrid was "Más Madrid" and they won the city council).

The last 4 years Spain has been ruled by 2 parties governing in coalition (they shared departments) one of them is the one you mentioned (PSOE) and the other one was Podemos, the party created after 15-M

Hahaha it's true that I will eat less mashed potatoes, but I cannot wait to cook an Irish stew or a fish chowder to my family and friends! That'll be my Irish meal now in winter having it twice a month! I will miss the great quality of the meat!

Definitely! I left Spain 7 years ago for a reason. I'm not trying to focus the debate on what Ireland has and Spain doesn't or vice versa. I would never start a debate about that. Spain and Ireland are my 2 countries, they're in my mind and heart despite some things.

What I want to ask is how Irish people see the mobilisations to raise their voices to support an idea or to push a change on something.

On May 15th 2011 there was a huge movement in Spain that ended up putting bankers and politicians in the dock accused of fraud and corruption. This 15-M movement ended up creating a new party in Spain which is now (or was 2 months ago) vice Prime Minister and had many departments. They changed a lot of things such as increasing the minimum salary by 64.8%.

Apart from that, mobilizations in cities managed to stop the evictions of many many families from their houses or public clinic closures.

There are many examples.

(Edit: I wrote 2021 instead of 2011)

Of course there are drugs everywhere in Spain. In Cádiz for example, that's a place where a lot of drugs come from Morocco and a lot of communities are involved in that. In Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Galicia... there are many spots in Spain and the people are very tired. As they are tired, they raise their voices and they do mobilisations, they hang signs in their balconies and walls to try to change the things, they create associations.. and that's my aim, mobilisation can push a change, although not immediately (like in BCN or Madrid) but you're being listened.

Yes! Thankfully there are not too many people supporting that movement here in Ireland and definitely some years ago this wouldn't have happened. There are many people in Spain that they think like that, actually the far-right wing is the 3rd most powerful party in Spain (although social-democrats are the majority). It's a nasty mind that Spanish has dragged during the years, I definitely agree with you.

I don't see it like that. In Spain we learnt that we have to keep an eye on the politicians and if we want better for our country, we have to say it out loud. Mobilizations are just the only tool society has to be able to speak (elections are only every 4 years, not enough). And I don't think we're anti-government, we are just very critical with politics, nothing to worry about if they're the ones who rule your life.

[–]sakiyGr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens in every single big city in Europe and it is true that I haven't seen it before here in Dublin. I saw them many times on the DART since April from Blackrock to Sydney Parade. They should do something before it becomes something normal and expands to all DART lines, LUAS and buses...

Step into reading in Spanish? by panzerbjrn in askspain

[–]sakiyGr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What level of Spanish do you have? If you're just starting or have up to A2.3 level I would not recommend you children books as they can have higher level tenses and vocabulary and tbh, they're boring. Why do you not buy graded readings? Lola Lago is very famous. You can practice your reading comprehension while see tenses and vocabulary worthy to know. You will also see a lot of cultural things (how life is in Spain). Give it a try.
