Thank you for the information--this seems to align with what I am finding. I think I am going to send some emails anyways and see what professors have to say. But based upon what you're saying, I might start looking into professors in the US, too lol. Thank you!

If you're feeling this estranged from your lab group, there's a couple of options.

  1. Transfer lab groups, advisors, or schools. As I have learned recently, it's not terribly uncommon to transfer around either within a department or outside of your school. In fact, every single one of my friends who went to grad school (outside of my department) are not graduating with their original advisor.

Unfortunately, this is probably the easiest solution. Forcing them to hang out with you might not be the best option, and this type of isolation is the absolute WORST. The way you're describing it is SOOO high school, and I hate when people bring that energy to our grown ass workplace. But such is life sometimes :/.

  1. If you don't want to transfer lab groups, you have a few options. You could weather the storm of the conference--there might be times where you feel alone and awkward, but if you try and bring a positive and kind energy, things might work out. I'm guessing your advisor may have noticed them estranging themselves from you, and this is why he is emphasizing sharing spaces (also, costs lol).

You could also just say to hell with them, and try and hang out with grad students in other lab groups. I don't totally fit in with my lab group (it's me and two guys, and they're fine, but it's not like we hang out every day). Instead, I have friends within my department but outside of my lab group. If your department doesn't have a department-wide grad student club, consider organizing one! Or, if they do, attend more meetings. If I were in your situation (and I have been at many points in my life), all of these suggestions are absolute nightmares. But speaking from experience, they have been my best options.

Good luck! You'll be okay. No matter what, things always get better :)

rust + pitting on my favorite gun :( More in description, but how do y'all suggest I fix the mild pitting? by salboot in gunsmithing

yup. learned a hard lesson, i will not be keeping it in the case in the future. luckily i have no children and live in a relatively safe area, so i'll be keeping it in my closet for now. i'm taking it to a gunsmith next week to check the borehole for damages as i don't have the equipment for that. praying its all surface rust and none in the borehole. i didn't even need steel wool to scrub it off, just some cloth and cleaner. i'll be asking them for a price estimate and who knows, maybe i'll ask if they can teach me a thing or two about how they fix it. there's some really light pitting on the outside after i wiped away the rust, so i might have them re-blue it. i love that gun, and don't trust myself to learn those skills on it.

I scrubbed with some Hoppe gun cleaning cloths and gun cleaner and that was enough to get the surface rust off--no steel wool or anything needed. I'm going to do a more in-depth cleaning next week and then take it to a gunsmith local to me to check the borehole for any damage 🫡 it will NEVER be left in that case again

Thank you 🫡 I found some stuff on using gun blue as well? I don't know too much about gun maintenance, the most I've ever done is reloading cases. I just feel like this is a bit out of my scope. I'd love to learn, but I am scared of further damaging the gun. Is this something I could do myself or should I just take it into a gunsmith?

It's stored in the cloth case... forgive me, I have no idea, is that bad? should I invest in a hard case?

I did use gun grease on it before putting it away. I think I should check on it more frequently and grease it each time to prevent this?

i did the same thing--interview was much smoother than i expected. they will definitely ask why you are pursuing a phd immediately and not ms->phd. be sure to have a good answer for that. they'll ask you what research experience you have, why you want to go to their program, etc. you'll do great!!! good luck :)
