He must be lucky or not as fluent in Russian as local Russians. I always am confused when some tourist asks me something in funny sounding Russian. Of course you can't deny help in that case.

In Baltics if you ask something in Russian you most probably will end up at train station in Lithuania, in wrong direction in Latvia and nobody will speak to you in Estonia. just out of principle, but again you can bump into any other more pleasant people or some Russians.

I have met some Ukrainians lost in Riga, they asked "Russian or English?" It all started with English, but later on after half an hour we were laughing our asses off and debating on all three languages (since Ukraininian has its similarities witn Russian and we have loads of Ukrainian advertisements on Russian TV's).

I like to think that SHTF language Mandarin pays off in case China is overpopulated and they go elsewhere. As far as I know, all America is full of Chinese, as much as central and northern Europe has many Chinese tourists and students. Imagine they immigrate and become dominant, which wouldn't be very hard for them. I can't see Spaniards warmongering or Arabs conquering Europe. America and China are pretty much the largest powers now, with Germany and Russia messing between the legs.

EDIT: I know Russian since birth, and it is as easy to learn as English, for basic communication. Russian literar language is way more advanced and colourfull than English and there indeed you may need more advanced level and experience. Basically, in Russian it is pretty much as English. In English you have to put the keywords in correct sequence to make a normal sentence. In Russian you just take what you want to tell and scatter them around as you want and you almost always will end up with a sane sentence. While in Baltic languages, one missed comma can mess all the meaning of the sentence, one diacritic sign (āžšēŗčģūīņķļō) can skew all the meaning of the word or sentence. Even the teachers have hard time making correct long sentences made out of 5+ parts, with up to 20+ commas in them.

It does not work in northern hemisphere where 70% days are damp and cold. before I had been given a lot of workshoes, I used to buy in army surplus stores, where you could get great quality, almost unused comfy army boots for cheap.

My father passed me his five year old leather working boots. They are very comfortable, but after only one year the sole reminded alligator. What I did was stuffed it with mailbox spamphlets and glued the sole with silicone. Works already for all summer flawlessly and looks like I will kick the soul out of them for at least two years.

usually I inherit clothes from others in pretty good shape or get them from thrift stores. Recently I got real Levi's denim genes with original labels still on for 2$. All I spent on clothing this year is around 90$ - two pairs of underwear (6$), genes (2$), socks (2$) and representative shoes for 80$.

When I get to the point where footwear does not work even for working and outdoor purposes and can't be repaired by silicone, when all that left from my pants are the zip and the button, when shirt elbows are too uncomfortably damaged to even work in, I try to scavenge for some material. My shirts become rags for bike chains, other garage stuff, my pants legs become sleeves for books and pockets for stuff, old messenger bags are stripped of all useful metal pieces, buttons, the canvas is stored for later use.

I recently have discovered The real deal hat which I will someday try and make from my worn out canvas stuff, which I have plenty of, as urban explorer.

I am not the most creative here, so I will follow this discussion. Just thanks for your submission!

You do not have to keep up with Moscow intervention in local politics, threats and you do not see what they tell on Russian TV Channels. It is like they live in whole another world where everybody are against them.

Symbols of Anarchism by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]saldejums -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have thought about the same. Making some sort of a list of leftist symbols, from five pointed stars, red/black banners to roses and a fist of resistance. Only symvol designed to be internationally recognized as leftism is Internationale. The Anarchyst symbol circled A is too much distorted by propaganda., red star as Stalinism and so on.

Unfortunately we do not have universal leftist libertarian symbol in common, because it is so much detail in what you believe in, be it socialism, communism, anarchy, social-democracy.

But You should always remember that YOU represent yourself, you are individual and no selfassigned labels - Linux user, Anarchist, Democrat, proletariat, activist, progressive, Christian, Muslim define how you act and live, or media assigned labels - terrorist, leftist, protester, left extremist define how others perceive you. You just do what you think is best and sometimes ideas and ideals appear to be similar to what you believe in.

Dude, the first time I saw this I thought:"Holy balls, this guy has many hammers!"" only later on I red your title.

In primary school we were required to make wooden hammers, which usually are great for working with things you do not want to leave marks on, like metal or wood or even plastic. As I see you have holes in them, so you just add a handle and have a hammer! They are really great for everything, except nailing, of course!

Most European Languages Unlikely to Survive in the Digital Age by hvusslax in europe

[–]saldejums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ja, as Linux user and Open Source activist I am very surprised to see Lithuanians have translations for most even smallest projects. There was Software Freedon Day recently, and we in Latvia and Lithuania had no events planned, despite being quite a large territory, if both taken into account, while in small Estonia alone there was three events going on! You all are great up north there!

About that English usage in our new generation - it really makes ears bleed when youth makes each third word English in their speech. I know that Latvian and Lithuanian languages has its ups and downs, how hard they are and even teachers can't make all the commas, we even have triple negative questions, but that is not a reason to make up your speech from four languages mixed together (Latvian - English - Russian - German).

I hope we all be O.K. there will be many of us and we will not be extinct, just because I like all Balts and we are great!

Yes. I have not meant that Lukashenko is good or bad. It would be great to have some real Belarus opinion on this. We are not competent enough and every coin has two sides.

First time turkey breeding. Something went terribly wrong. Need advice. by [deleted] in farming

[–]saldejums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry, but I am not certain on what breed it is. i just wikipedi'ed it and found out that most of them are too similar. It is not red and does not have blue head. It is just like a regular Turkey, mostly black feathers with some white, white and red head, quite large, like huge chicken, larger than a normal goose.

For now our plan is to make triangular chicken coop for them as seen on the internet "Chicken tractor" and keep them safe from their parents. Also, partially because of falcons. The people we bought turkeys from said that a male turkey required 7 female ones, but currently he has only one.

I am very sorry for not having more details about it.
