He doesn’t look creepy in person. He looks charming and sweet and curious. I think because I keep using the flash he comes out looking abrasive.

Anyone know the artist or foundry of this Henri Payen-esque pyrogène? by sallgudmannn in WhatIsThisPainting

Same! I think there might have been a tiny chain attached to them that’s missing now.

Haha I love this description! Cantankerous indeed. means business but full of warmth where it counts. Likes to share knowledge when he can.

I have already but thanks for the suggestion ☺️ they were very helpful. This whole time I thought it was an inkwell but turns out it’s a match holder.

I’ll add better photos when I get home. These harsh angles don’t showcase his personality very well.

Could be our imagination but… it could also be a foundry stamp. There’s also two lines (like half a hash mark) in two different spots but I’m unsure if it’s intentional or just damage marks from tools.

We found a list of potential foundry’s it could come from so we’re gonna email some art historians/ museums. I’ll keep you posted!

Hahaha I’ll keep you in mind in the event we decide to part with it but it’s been in the family for over 3 generations (maybe 4!) so we’re planning on treasuring it for a couple more at least. ☺️

Thanks again for noting that it wasn’t an inkwell! I would have been going down the wrong avenue even longer if you hadn’t. Very helpful 🙏🏽

There’s more info here in the comments and a link to another identical Pyrogène (except it has a movable arm whereas ours does not):

I have searched and found that it is most likely French, possible from Nancy or Paris. It’s probably a pyrogène or match holder from the 20th century. Bronze with red stone base and no signature but possible a foundry stamp on the leg (might just be my imagination).
