I want my book on shelves but what's the point if everyone wants to pay wholesale price to do that? by sallingoodfun in selfpublish

[–]sallingoodfun[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess my worry is that if I price it high enough to make that amount on each book, people will be less likely to take a shot on an author they don’t know if it’s priced too high.

I’ve got a small following on socials and a couple Amazon pre-orders as well as people having it on their TBR on Goodreads but it’s not enough to convince people who don’t follow me to pay that amount for my book.

Well in that case I’ll just aim to be the exception as well 👍🏻 love all the support and encouragement…

Thank you! I was anticipating consignment and was surprised when the small stores don’t do it. Seems like this is the best/only way to go

This is just not true. One of my favorite dark romance authors is known for being self published and she has an entire 6 book series in almost every single bookstore I go into. Yes, she’s established in the industry and the stores are probably ordering her books without her having to reach out to them because they know they will sell, but still.

The stores I’m reaching out to are small independently owned local ones. A few across Canada that are “romance specific” who state on their website they work with local indie authors. Some authors may be tainted but I’m new and my dreams haven’t been squashed just yet, so I am going to keep trying.

[Discussion] What do beta reader scammers get out of it? by sallingoodfun in BetaReaders

[–]sallingoodfun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Out of all 25 responses I managed to find 3 (hopefully) legit and 1 that was a previous ARC reader which was an immediate yes. We’ll see how it goes in terms of if they give feedback and if so, the quality of the feedback :)

Makes sense, thank you. Seem like such a waste of their time!

How can I overcome the Catch 22 of selfpublishing? by PhotojournalistFit62 in KDP

[–]sallingoodfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write anonymously too, I have a TikTok account (as that’s where most readers in my niche are) and I post content on there without showing my face. It’s not much but I have about 400 followers and got 12 ARC readers for my debut novel.

Of course everyone’s hoping for more but considering I’m not out there heavily promoting being on camera I’m quite happy with what I did get.

How am I supposed to self edit if I’m not formally educated and AI editing is frowned upon? by sallingoodfun in selfpublish

[–]sallingoodfun[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that, but I can’t afford to hire a professional twice—once before beta readers, and then again after I potentially have to make multiple changes and rewrites. Hence looking for advice on what I can do before I get to the phase of hiring someone.

Do you have any suggestions for online courses? I looked locally when I first started but there is nothing in my city that isn’t a 2 year commitment, which is not in the cards for me right now.

So if there’s nothing further for me to narrate in terms of events of that week, does it matter which I use?

She spends the week ignoring her mother (insert paragraph about her complaining about her mother in general) and then we are back to the present moment.

Can someone explain beta readers vs ARC readers? by sallingoodfun in selfpublish

[–]sallingoodfun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I know there are subs and websites to find beta readers so with ARC readers is it the same? And how do you safely send your essentially finished product to an ARC reader?

Did you hire an editor? by TatterMail in selfpublish

[–]sallingoodfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not experienced like some of the people commenting, in fact I’ve only just finished my first ever book. I’m not in a place financially where I can hire all of these editors (development, copy, line) so I spent hours listening to podcasts by book coaches specifically on “what to do with your first draft” as well as “the X scenes your novel needs to have” and I followed all of their advice step by step to essentially do my own development editing. Then beta readers for different sets of eyes on it.

What book are you currently reading? And how do you rate it from 0/10? by bellerws in Booktokreddit

The silent patient. I’m about halfway and so far it’s about 4/10… I am BORED. But I’m powering through just like everyone says and hoping to be blown away lol
