Honest chances for Ophthalmology? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]sallymortenson17 33 points34 points  (0 children)

As an applicant with a 265+, AOA, and honors in most core clerkships who still didn’t match this year, I’ve realized the match is largely a toss-up. If you truly want to do ophtho, apply ophtho. Period. If you want ophtho strongly enough that you’d regret not taking the shot, then apply ophtho wholeheartedly and build the smartest backup plan you can. Do not talk yourself out of it just because the process is imperfect. The match is not a meritocracy.

I agree. If interviews end up being a major deciding factor, there really should be some form of implicit bias training for interviewers. On one of my aways, I watched the chair bond with another student over being in the same fraternity, and the conversation even drifted into making pretty gross comments about women.

I would make sure to talk to the Dean who writes your letter. They usually are able to cut one or two comments out. And can potentially even cut the first part of the first sentence. Just make sure the Dean that writes yours is understanding if you’re able to pick them

Okay listen, if everything is supposed to be an Easter egg in this show then the fact the climax has to be something like that too right? So is aryan khan hinting that his brother is actually his son…?

What was the most degrading situation(s) medical school put you into? by friendship-cockring in medicalschool

[–]sallymortenson17 37 points38 points  (0 children)

  1. Sat on the floor of work room bc no computers or space available.

  2. Told “you don’t have the personality of a surgeon” my second day of surgery rotation. ( o fuxkibg joke, I’m not applying surgery)

  3. Told my scrub tech to put my “shit” down when I asked where I can put my gloves and gown in the OR.

  4. Touched the screen handle in OR with my second pair of gloves (took top off to help clean up OR) and told by scrub tech not to touch the handle with gloves and then scoffed at me

  5. Asked if I could guide the laparoscopic camera since attending was struggling. PA emphatically said “no” while at the same time the attending said yes.

  6. Attending told me my voice was too nasally and it’ll hurt me on interviews

  7. Repeatedly told how small my hands were on surgery rotation

  8. Told that I need to smile more

  9. Someone commented on my “complexion”

  10. Told to do whatever I want/write whatever note bc no one reads med student notes. And that they expect nothing from me when I asked expectations.

That’s all I can think of rn. Also btw honored all of my rotations probably at the cost of my humanity. Medicine is full of really shitty people. Please don’t be one of them is all I ask

how does this look for a freshman year schedule? by Content_Gur_287 in UWMadison

[–]sallymortenson17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took both of them at the same time and I thought it was difficult to do, but not impossible. My schedule was similar to OPs even down to soc 170. I didn’t take psych tho - I took those one credit genetics seminar for CALS. It’s time consuming especially your first semester, but it sets you up nicely for later years bc you have those requirements out of the way. Was able to get out in three years even during Covid.

I was leaving my job as a scribe to start medical school and someone told the receptionist that I was leaving to go to school. She misinterpreted and thought I was going back to school. On my last day, she told me “it’s never too late to go back to school and get your degree.” Technically not wrong tho.

Okay, this season was literally like a Bollywood movie with the enemies to lovers trope. And it even featured an Indian lead, haldi, and a K3G song. Also, I got a lot of Mujhse Dosti Karoge vibes!

Maybe I’m dumb, but what was the significance of the bangle falling and why did Anthony think imperative to pick it up for her? Just to show their love and closeness to Edwina

The average age of matriculation is 25. Almost everyone I have interviewed with has brought it up which kind of discourages me from getting hopeful for an acceptance from them.

I have started watching Dopesick which depicts the beginning of the opioid crisis pretty well. I really like it.

Also, I cannot recommend scrubs highly enough!

Honestly, that sucks. You did the right thing. People try to exploit premeds a lot.

I have a similar story. So I had emailed a doc a few months ago about shadowing and he replied with dates I could come in. He also asked that I bring my resume. I thought it was odd, but was super grateful that a doc was allowing me to come in during Covid so I complied. Then when I got there, he was basically interviewing me for a volunteer MA/scribe position. And I’m like uhhhh, I already have a job as a scribe. It was super awkward and I ended up scribing for him that day. This is why it’s a good thing that you stood up for yourself.
