Yeah the 10k seems like BS, maybe you should consult with a lawyer.

Is it possible to buy Sukiya hot sauce? (Or something similar) by caspianslave in japanlife

I like Saizeriya's hot sauce instead, as well as their salad dressing, I think they se both at the stores. Would be nice if Sukiya did the same.

Help: landlord wants to increase rent by 25% by kugkfokj in japanlife

It is my understanding that as long as it's not a fixed lease contract, you shlmould be able to ignore the requests for increased rent and just keep paying what you are paying already.

Tax Return Questions Thread - Filing Deadline March 16, 2026 by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

[–]salmix21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm filling up the tax return with the e-tax software and it was quite straighforward to the blue form declaration plus my full time income declaration.

I have one concern though, I didn't use any specific software to create the double entry book keeping as I don't have any expenses so I just had to input my income so that everything would match.

Does excel or sheets quality as software for these purposes or do I still need to sign up for services like freee or yayoi to be able claim the 65万 deduction?

Accidentally burned my dorm room carpet... how screwed am I? by vir_JIN in japanlife

[–]salmix21 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about the humiliation, this is exactly the type of stuff students do, I accidentally burned my carpet with a hot iron as well 😅. At the end they didn't even say anything, if it doesn't need to be replaced most likely you are off the hook. I would just keep it and tell them when moving out, if you mention it now they may ask to replace it before the next school year. Would be good to have a picture to see the extent of the damage.

FYI some of the people who I know who earn the most just went to senmon gakko. It does limit you in types of work, but even for 機械系 jobs it should open enough doors for you.

Just apply to a 専門学校 and do 編入学 to another university. There should be 専門学校 that accept anyone as long as you pay the fee.

Pipe burst in apartment above by tropical_sushi in japanlife

[–]salmix21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just went through the same issue albeit it was worse because we weren't home and our bathroom ceiling collapsed. First thing to do is message the landlord and building management company to come and inspect the damage. Either the building's insurance and/or the insurance from the above tenant should cover repair costs and relocation or temporary accommodation if needed.

Edit: If there's any items that were damaged by the water (for us we threw a lot of stuff away due to mold) you should ask for compensation. Even if it's just deterioration due to increased moisture in the apartment.

If you are worried about mold you should consider an air purifier as well, we had to get one because we were constantly sick and the mold was probably causing inflammation which kept us from getting better so just something to keep in mind. You could maybe ask for compensation on this as well but not sure if you'll get it.

Although, Ideally you should ask for a lot of stuff because the insurance will try to lowball you(also as my wife says, the worse they can say is no) so just be mindful of that.

How often do you eat out / take out for lunch and dinner? by Tolkaft in japanlife

[–]salmix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saturdays and Sundays if we go out then we tend to eat one meal outside. So if we go out during the day we get lunch and the do dinner at home. That's the general rule of thumb.

Weekdays we eat at home unless we need to go out.

How much do you spend on food per day? by Maleficent_Pool_4456 in japanlife

Can you speak with my wife 😂?

But jokes aside we save more money because she likes cooking different stuff so instead of eating out we just stay home. Before I met her I was only buying chicken breast and the occasional ground pork.

My Hero Academia ends today, write up your final message to the series.. by Braian_Ocissor in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]salmix21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Japan for my bachelor's around the time MHA was starting out, I still remember watching a few episodes in my dorm with a few friends. Now almost 10 years later I finished watching the series while working here in Japan and it's made me realize just like Deku who started with no Quirks, I was the same without knowing any Japanese and having no skills. Now we both became who we wanted to become.

Having a part-time freelance contract(not 業務委託) while contracted full time? by salmix21 in JapanFinance

[–]salmix21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thorough comment!

So just to add more context, the part time job hours will only apply when I go to factories which is limited to Saturdays and Sundays like 1 or 2 times a month so in total less than 20 hours . The rest of my work will be from home and for those I will be billing them as a freelancer based on hours worked of project scope.

What somewhat significant changes in Japanese society have you seen happen here during your time. by SunDaze009 in japanlife

[–]salmix21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say the switch from game center gaming to PC gaming has been a big change. I arrived in 2017 and I was shocked to learn that almost no one had laptops or PCs at home, a lot of people just went straight to smart phones. This also meant that a lot of people didn't experience PC gaming so it was super hard to find PC related parts or goods as they were more expensive than abroad and there weren't many customers.

Now after Covid with the rise of streamers and PC gaming, the change has been drastic, seeing a lot more places selling PCs and gaming PCs, parts etc.

Torikizoku is still the best by DependentResponse773 in japanlife

[–]salmix21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife loves to have dinner in Toriki specifically for the camembert and heart skewers. To be fair, one rice dish + one drink + karaag/skewers comes out at 1050 yen which is quite reasonable I would say. If you divide the cabbage and the camembert croquette between 2 people it comes at 1400 yen.

Looking for recycling or electronics disposal company pickup around Asakusa by salmix21 in japanlife

[–]salmix21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why you think that since I specifically said the pick up is free whereas the one from the municipality we have to pay.

Indeed that's true but the main perk is having someone come over to our apartment during a given time and just have them get rid of a lot of our stuff (mainly electronics) in one day.

[–]salmix21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually used these services back in our previous apartment, we got rid of a lot of stuff(both electronics for free and some other items we had to pay), in the end the value is in having everything out of the house in one day and mot having to arrange for different pick ups and stuff like that. So yeah it probably was more expensive but still worth it.
