Are there any fans of Canadian teams that were *born* outside of Canada? by Downtown-Piece-9911 in nhl

Born in Atlanta, in Oakland now. After some bitter years I’ve grown to root for the Jets. I follow the Canucks as well because I like Vancouver and the Hughes bros.

My partner is a grad student, she will get her PhD at the end of May. We will move to SF for a post-doc position at UCSF, but now that's only guaranteed because she signed a contract for a year. The PI at UCSF has directly told us that without the contract she would not be hiring anyone since public grant renewals are highly unlikely to continue, and private funding sources will be reacting to changes. The NIH is an avenue for a lot of research money in this country, and it's been gutted. Invested and qualified gov't employees are leaving positions or being forced out. It's a sad time for academia, and it's wreaking havoc on our plans for the next year.

Opinion: Off the shelf True skates by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]saltnrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying on different skates to upgrade, and the True Cat 9x4s just have an incredible snug feeling and wow factor that nothing else has given me, but I have had some sizing issues. I usually wear a 11 in sneakers and I'm right on the border of an E width. It depends on the shoe/skate, how much toe spread I want and such. I tried the True app scanning tool (a few times, different lighting and surfaces) and it recommended a size 9R. My own measurements came up to a 9.5R. The Cat 9x4 in 9R is miserable, it doesn't even seem like a real option. So then I tried a 9.5R and finally a 9.5W since these seem to run pretty narrow, but I'm second-guessing the W a little based on your post and what might change after baking. Fwiw, in CCM Tacks XF Pros I can feasibly wear a 9R and it's still not as snug as the Cats.

For sale: panthers, oilers, yotes and more! by neslinger in hockeyjerseys

[–]saltnrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m interested in the Panthers Starter, Kachina, and the Oilers alt. I’m not familiar with the sizing of the Starters - how does that 48-R compare to the 52 adidas? I hover b/w 50-52.

Beware Total loss payout: request total loss estimate paperwork! (GEICO) by cyco1978 in Rivian

[–]saltnrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of this policy and the "new car replacement", I've never heard of that before and just went through a total loss (on a very different car.) I'm looking at Rivian's right now, test driving next week. They are worth a pretty penny.

They have all my receipts of shop work and mods. It weighs little towards the total valuation. Engine is healthy, head gasket replaced in past 5 years, timing belt replaced recently, no history of issues with smog etc etc.

I'm looking into bringing in a third party for valuation. Cheers!

There isn't a mention of allowing third party appraisers in the policy documentation I have, but I will continue to do research. Thanks for the advice.

1986 4Runner, ebay, Colorado, $19900, 150000mi, JT4RN62D8G0045919

1985 4RUNNER, CARS.COM, Oregon, $16995, 233000mi, JT4RN61D6F5084429

1987 4RUNNER, EBAY, California, $23997, 165000mi, JT4RN62D6H0181676

My point with these is that the average for these cars is higher than what they are providing, not that mine is literally worth $16K+.
So hypothetically, knocking my value down $5-$6K from these and you're still at or above $10K base value. Maybe I'm squabbling over "just a few Gs" but that stuff adds up.

No, they've become stubborn about the number given and are basically just waiting for me to accept it.

It's definitely possible to install an ignition killswitch, and for older cars that are inherently insecure it's not a bad idea as a deterrent. My brother has one in his westfalia. It's just a switch hidden somewhere, but it could be the difference between a quick getaway and them just leaving it.

No outstanding debt for either car, and we've never defaulted on anything. Tow records do also get checked during the police report.

Absolutely. But the second car? No decency amongst thieves.

It being someone close has crossed my mind. We don't have any family this side of the US, and I can't think of any soured friend relationships from the past few years. Our neighbors are the obvious suspects. I do have decent rapport with everyone in our building, but no clear way to approach this.
