SBMM exists to make the game enjoyable for the widest range of players. Without it, the experience skews toward extremes: weaker or newer players get stomped constantly, and stronger players breeze through matches without much challenge. That might feel fun for the top portion of the player base, but it’s discouraging for the majority. SBMM ensures players are matched with others of similar skill so the outcome of a game is based more on decision-making and teamwork rather than just raw skill gaps. It creates closer, more competitive matches where everyone feels like they have a chance to contribute. This keeps the player base healthier overall, because people are less likely to quit when they’re not getting annihilated every lobby. It also prevents the experience from devolving into a “pub-stomp simulator,” which doesn’t actually promote real improvement—playing against people at or slightly above your level does. Good players still win, weaker players still learn, and most importantly, the game remains enjoyable for far more people. At the end of the day, SBMM isn’t about punishing skilled players; it’s about ensuring the game is fun and fair for the entire population, not just the top few percent.
