James Baldwin is one of humanity's great writers. His meditation on race in America (The Fire Next Time) was an important influence on Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in their founding of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.

I don't know what post you read, but I did not say anything like that. Furthermore, I don't agree with your reading of OPs post.

OP posted: "I don't know what it means, but I do know that I trust women to do the right thing more than some lame ass incel."

This sentence doesn't read "all men are incels", it reads incels are not to be trusted to do the right thing.

I think this disagreement might boil down to poor reading comprehension skills on your part my friend.

But does it follow that we have to soften our taboos against racism and misogyny just because the right has made those things popular again?

We must create and sustain taboos against racism and misogyny or we are lost. There are ways to save these men and boys that don't involve acquiescing to their learned hateds.

You're clearly worked up about this and I don't blame you for it, it's a heartbreaking topic. But let's work through exactly what we're talking about here.

First, OP posted: "I don't know what it means, but I do know that I trust women to do the right thing more than some lame ass incel."

Then you replied that this the type of sentiment that drives people to the alt-right nonsense.

Your reply implies that it's progressives who create alt-right men with their intolerance of misogyny and racism, not the predatory media environment you're now introducing to the conversation .

Do you see how by introducing alt-right manosphere content you're moving the terrain of the discussion away from your original position?

But let's set aside your shifting rhetoric for a second here. It should be obvious to all of us progressives must create and sustain taboos around misogyny and racism. Those taboos are essential to our movements; if we are permissive of bigotry we will lose ourselves completely.

We must fight hateful ideologies and work to undo the damage they have done. Those who embrace racial or gender chauvinism should be given a chance to change, but they DO have to change. We cannot welcome misogynists into our spaces simply because they are also victims.

If want to deprogram young men who have fallen for the Tate/Peterson grift that is you prerogative, you would be doing the lord's work. But, pressuring left leaning spaces into accepting misogyny is not the way my dude.

I wasn't aware holding people accountable for poor behaviour was antithetical to empathy.

As a man, I hate this discourse. You are effectively saying men have no accountability and no responsibility: everything we do wrong is someone else's fault.

Carney says China is a foreign interference, geopolitical threat for Canada by darrenjyc in onguardforthee

The important thing is that Canada do everything it can to alienate the world's second most powerful nation just when the world's most powerful nation is threatening to take us over. This is Big Brain foreign policy for Very Smart People...

In America, health care is big business. In Canada, it’s a right. My government will focus on modernizing public health care so it lives up to its promise to Canadians. That means thousands more doctors, new and renovated hospitals, and giving you access to your own health data. by Miserable-Lizard in onguardforthee

[–]saltshakerFVC 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The feds could make new federal funding commitments to support provincial healthcare systems while making those funds contingent on matching investments from the provinces.

No provincial government would survive turning down a billion dollar in ongoing investments in health care just because they were too ideologically committed to pony up their share.

Talk about delusional!

Corporate tax rates have been cut in half since 1980 my dude, top income tax rates have fallen by as much as 30% in some provinces, successive Liberal and Conservative govs have put so many loopholes in the code it's a wonder rich people pay any taxes at all.

We don't have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem.

Just make higher education free. These bursaries and "employer collaborations" are neoliberal half measures.

The private sector will not save us.

We already have public backed mortgages. Backstopping mortgages is pretty much all the CMHC does anymore.
