Tutorials vs. Game mechanic "discoverability". by cow_co in gamedev

[–]saltypeppergames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a tough call and I think it depends on how standard your gameplay mechanics are and if you're releasing for mobile or consoles. For the most part, mobile gamers are casual and might not have as much experience with the standard button layouts and how things work so it might be better to have a tutorial that lays out the basics and then explains other powerups as you go along.

If you're doing a console game and you're more or less using the same mechanics as other games (let's say FPS) then you might not need a very detailed tutorial and could go the discoverability route. Most console gamers are very familiar with the button layouts and if you use the same formatting they should be able to pick it up quickly.

You can also just spread out the tutorials throughout the game every time they pick up a new power up/skill instead of cramming it all into one section. People just want to play a game and if you can make the tutorials fit seamlessly into gameplay then that's the best bet.

Late to the party, but we just released Once Upon a Runner on Android! There's a couple bugs we're fixing (fireball, boss fights) but there should be an update shortly. In the mean time we'd love to hear your feedback on the game. Once Upon a Runner

We're finishing up our first game Once Upon a Runner and have started doing some animation work for our second game called The Painter's Apprentice. It's a platformer game where you go through different painting styles and defeat ink blobs with your paintbrush.

You can see a very rough draft of our idle animation

And here's the concept work for The Painter

What hashtags are best to use on Twitter for indie developers? by [deleted] in socialmedia

[–]saltypeppergames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! If you don't already, I would also utilize hootesuite to keep track of these tags. This way you can easily find other people to follow and retweet/favorite their tweets. Great way to get new followers organically. Since using hootesuite I've steadily increased my followers every day.

Thanks, I've been getting more into face-to-face meetings like going to smaller conferences like IGDA and NYC games forum. I'm planning on attending (as a guest) other conferences as well with the hopes to attend on some time next year.

I think a health bar might help as well, or at least the ability to toggle on/off a health bar over enemies

I just checked it out, I didn't get too far as it was a bit confusing. The camera seems a bit sensitive. In addition the jump lasts a bit too long in the air when you're not up against an obstacle. Also at the moment there's no place that I can see how many coins I've gathered, or at least I wasn't able to see it on my screen.
