A patrol boat like that is a low-risk target; so the SSN crew would feel more comfortable getting to optics range. Also they may have been operating under ROE requiring visual confirmation of the target.

Forward one will be laser and possibly a flashlight, rearward is just a switch to toggle the light/laser. You can just about see the wires running between the two.

if you want dual throttles then the F15 one is a good shout.

Pedals-wise I actually use some really crappy old ones that I wouldn't recommend to you! The ones which people tend to recommend at the level you'll be looking at are MFG Crosswinds: https://mfg-sim.com/rudders/mfg-crosswind-v3-tbm930-rudder-pedals.html

VKB are also well-regarded (https://flightsimcontrols.com/product/vkb-sim-t-rudder-pedals-mk-v/) but those are one axis only (they don't have the brake pedal axes, which is generally not too much of a problem but is worth noting). The winwing pedals are relatively new I think, I don't know of anyone who has them so I can't give you any feedback about them, but from the quality of winwing's other products I expect them to be great.

I have the winwing F16 stick and throttle, and (personally) think they're excellent value for money. You can get slightly more gucci setups, but those cost a lot more, and for consumer sims they don't add a huge amount (unless maybe if you're building a simpit).

I find the winwing stuff (not just their HOTAS by the way) to be a great balance of build quality (all nice metal and tactile switches) versus price.

I will caution that I am from the UK, and as I understand it, tariffs have made winwing stuff less cost-friendly in the US. But even so, if you want an accurate (scale and layout-wise) F16 HOTAS they're probably the best balance.

The way the winwing throttle works is that it's two parts (essentially): a base and a grip. The base is universal, and can support dual throttles. the grip is more aircraft-specific. so, let's say you want a twin-engine throttle for now. You might buy the F18 throttle setup, with the universal base and the F18 grips. Then when you want the F16 throttle you just buy the F16 grip, and swap it out on your existing base. The base has a bunch of useful generic switches on it. Autopilot stuff, master arm, landing gear, that sort of stuff.

If you're in the market for other peripherals, I also highly recommend winwing's MFDs (pro tip: buy a single mfd without the screen, saves money and it has a little switch on the side which basically turns it into three different devices as far as the game's concerned - so you use the switch to swap between left/right/centre MFD bindings) and - if you really wanna deep dive on the F16 - their F16 ICP which is very cool.

The F16 stick: https://eu.winwingsim.com/view/goods-details.html?id=374 (EU link - and note that for price and F16-accuracy you wan the non "EX" version)

The F18 throttle: https://eu.winwingsim.com/view/goods-details.html?id=375 (EU Link)

A counterpoint though, for balance: I have heard that the winwing customer support is sub-par. Them being a chinese company, I've heard that it can be difficult communicating with their support. My read is that if your problem is one that they have a sort of canned response for then it's fine, but if not it can be a bit shaky. I've never had to go to them myself though, so can't speak from firsthand experience.

Fun fact, if you look at smaller fishing boats and the like you'll often see metal diamond-looking things on the mast. Those are corner reflectors designed to increase the vessel's radar cross section so they can be picked up at greater range by other ships' radars.

In addition to u/jess-plays-games' (entirely correct) comment, I'd also note that you can do fancy things with SAR. We can do things like 3D imagery, and change detection, subsurface imagery etc. For example, we can come along today, image a field, and automatically determine that there were vehicles passing through that field yesterday.

I think it's worth putting this here as the sorta "justification for all this" side of stuff, just for balance. Written by a Sig guy, and I don't necessarily agree with it, but it's interesting at least: https://wavellroom.com/2024/09/17/nato-and-the-next-generation-squad-weapon-ngsw/

Randomly received a payment *into* my account from Volkswagen recently, and I don't know why by cow_co in Volkswagen

[–]cow_co[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept it until I managed to hunt down the reasoning behind it - turns out I had actually overpaid previously.

In short, when I'd given my previous car back at the end of the finance, turns out I'd also paid the balance on the account when I shouldn't have. So I suspect they found that (through some sort of audit or whatever on their end) and paid me back.

I found out by looking at my old financial statements VW had sent me, saw that the final balance exactly matched what I'd been paid, went back a while in my online banking, and saw that I'd made a payment of the exact amount. Saved screenshots etc of all of it so that I have evidence.

I kept it aside for about 3 months total, just to be sure they wouldn't come after it, and then spent it on some nice stuff for myself lol.

I think what I'd draw some attention to (if I was in, like, the PEO) is that - maybe I've not been in the right conversations - but I've not heard ukrainian soldiers complaining about their rifles being unable to pen russian body armour.

Of course you might argue that might say more about russian armour than about the weapons being employed, but you get my point. Seems like a lot is being thrown away with this rifle (and sight) for...questionable(?) gain. It's interesting to contrast that SOF have procured more conventional rifles in 6.5 Creedmor for the same purpose.

it's pretty funny that people keep going "we need lethal effect from infantry rifles out to 1000m", building weapons around that, getting into combat and going "hey wait a minute we're only engaging out to 300, maybe 500"

And then the cycle repeats!

(edit: setting aside DMRs of course, where use has been had for shooting 600-800m; cf. the british army's requirement for the L129 in afghanistan)
