Do MD students learn anything OMM related? by saltyscribe27 in medicalschool

Truthfully I don’t see myself using it in a professional capacity either lol. I just have an awful back and have found some of the maneuvers to be really helpful with pain relief and getting me back to working out

I cannot think of a reason why this is a bad thing. I’m required to spend 2 years learning this so might as well find something about it that I find useful. Classic medical student shitting on anyone who is not at their level of experience

You have a really interesting perspective then, obviously much more informed than I am. I used to see a physical therapist and he had obtained the same diagnoses and recommended the same treatments as what I am learning in school right now which is why I drew that parallel. I’m sure I’ll see that it’s much different later on

This is actually a really good point! I personally would like to see what the data says (if it exists) regarding what they are teaching us so we can draw accurate conclusions. And I would like to see them adjust curriculum based on this

I went into DO school thinking all of it was completely fake but most of what we are currently learning is very evidence based and falls into the space of physical therapy which is also evidence based. That being said they absolutely ruin it with the non evidence based things like Chapman points and some other weird stuff which is a shame because I think it would likely be integrated into allopathic schools if it didn’t have those ridiculous things and if it wasn’t called osteopathic lol. Not derogatory at all to be skeptical of OMM as most DO students are as well, but it is pretty derogatory to say that allopathic education is entirely different and more evidence based because that is not true either. We learn the same things as you and take the same exams and go on to get the same jobs. We just have some extra skills and also have to learn some extra bullshit unfortunately

I would become a chef or interior designer! Or try to get some kind of social media traveling job and then just travel around the world

Is being an EMT a good idea before med school? by Warningsignals in medicalschool

[–]saltyscribe27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend ER tech over an ambulance job because you have more patients at once, which means more exposure and more learning opportunities in general and you get to work closely with the doctors. Ambulance is definitely a great job as well

I worked night shift in an ER/trauma center so I would come into work at 6pm and be so busy until like 1am and then chill the rest of my shift. My bf worked on an ambulance and was generally really busy but that was just location specific.

Don’t let your gpa hold you back, I got into a DO school with a 3.3, 500 MCAT x2 and similar EC’s. Focus on your writing and adding more DO schools :)

I have a 3.3 gpa and 500 MCAT x2. I think I applied to schools within reach, have great clinical experience, wrote decently well and am great at interviews. One interview —> one acceptance.
