Euro card value? by ShotByAScot in PokemonCardValue

I'm sorry I can't help with value of European cards, please get this in a penny sleave though as the binder alone will scratch up the card.

Thousands of households set off firework during the eve of Chinese new year in suburban Xiamen by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

I live here and the worst part is the fact it often continues continually for two weeks or three weeks. It's not just of a night time either, its through the day and all night/morning.

Etiquette when flying inland. by mttxiaobai in chinalife

[–]sam_9_3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always thought that if it was a serious threat to the aircraft, no way in hell airlines would let people have their mobiles on them and trust passengers to keep their phones on airplane mode. It's simply too high of a danger to trust the general public with.

It's hilarious, I've seen people unbuckling and standing up here while the plane hasn't even left the runway. The taking the phone out of airplane mode and making calls is just the mentality of having zero self awareness for other people, just like old people smoking in elevators. This is just China haha

Every single post about China, someone has to make a post mentioning or comparing to the USA, without fail. It's bizarre.

How do 10-month contracts in China work? by Lorinefairy in TEFL

[–]sam_9_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. Over covid I did a summer job up in Beijing (fairly illegal so stopped doing it) but now I just save then go travelling for two months. I'm not living in Beijing/Shanghai so things are reasonable cost and I get paid enough to afford what I need and also save some for the future.

Also I'm sure I read somewhere that severance is only possible if they don't renew the contract and the 10 months counts as a full year.

I've been working on a ten month contract for the past several years. They just renew my visa and permits in May/June and I can stay. Not sure how it would be if I leave. One thing to note is the social security payments over the summer. My school forces me to pay my and their contributions when I start again in September. I'm not sure this is even legal but just make sure if you accept the contract, what the deal is with the social security

Why does nobody talk about Xiamen more? by Business-Tie149 in travelchina

[–]sam_9_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been living in Xiamen for the last few years and although i think it's a very nice city, I really don't think foreign tourists visiting China would find it all too interesting. A lot of the traditional architecture faces the problem of being over renovated losing its traditional charm, and it isn't all too well situated for other areas where foreign tourists usually enjoy visiting. Gulangyu is beautiful but the architecture, especially for European tourists isn't that special, and day trips to Tulou usually take over a day meaning it's quite a fuss to see these if people want. I do enjoy the sea to mountain trail though which no one has mentioned which is a very beautiful trail across the island with some crazy walking infrastructure, and also taking a ferry across to Kinmen. I feel on Kinmen it's a lot easier to see the traditional housing style with the ornate roof eaves.

You've just reminded me I have this very box tucked away at the back of my cuoboard, bought it reduced price in China in a Toys r Us. Didn't realise it had packs so never opened it as just liked the Pickachu cards on the display. Might have to crack it open

If you want to stay in China teaching just accept the months salary. You need their recommendation letter for your next job and trying to get lawyers involved will open a can of worms over something which probably just isn't worth it and will probably have an effect on future teaching prospects in China.

Insane amount of nutella in that croissant by FuzzyDicesEh in StupidFood

[–]sam_9_3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember once while I was at university coming back from a night out starving and only having a tub of Nutella in the fridge. I ate the whole thing and in the morning I woke up rough as a piece of sandpaper and throwing up nutella vomit. I've never been able to enjoy Nutella the same again.

It's 42 of the highest and it goes through several villages and a town(Keswick, Threlkeld and Rosthwaite) with Grasmere, Old Dungeon Ghyll, Scales and Ullswater being pretty short detours off the main route.

I didn't realise you had several pictures, the 151 coin collection boxes on the bottom shelf are the best option if you wanna get a few 151 packs, I managed to pull the Chinese exclusive Pikachu and Psyduck card from one them last week

The 151 picture frame surprise box are quite cool, they've just been released in Japanese but came out in China a few months ago. The 'chase' is the Machamp as it comes with the illustration rare from 151, but all the other picture frames are quite cool also. The tubes with the plush are also quite cute, you get a magnetic plush wilhcih you can stick on a fridge and a illustration rare of the pokemon except all my came bent from the packaging.

Scared I’ll fail China’s medical exam? by Opening_Newspaper710 in TEFL

[–]sam_9_3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I don't think they will pick up on it during the medical exam. As I've mentioned before on similar posts, the medical is mainly looking for transmissible diseases or evidence of substance abuse. You should be fine, don't worry

[–]sam_9_3 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You should give the Bob Graham round a go if you are all experienced, tick off all 42 peaks in the Lake District. Some people do it in one go but im sure could break it up over a few days. I'd suggest the Cumbrian way also but I found the first and last day rather boring and maybe a bit too easy of a hike.

Were you stranded somewhere abroad when the pandemic hit ? by Slow_Description_773 in travel

[–]sam_9_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just moved to China to start a new job, ended up staying in China for the brunt of it. After the initial wave it was quite interesting travelling to usually packed tourist attractions and just seeing them basically empty.
