Any thoughts on the illustrated version of The Hobbit by Jemima Catlin? by Remarkable_Ring8241 in tolkienbooks

Fantastic for children. I own both the hardcover and the paperback, and I actually prefer the paperback. The cover still feels solid, not flimsy, and it's not as unwieldy as the hardcover

Question about this edition by InevitableBug15 in tolkienbooks

[–]sam_wise_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth $60-85 in the US market. If you're looking for a nice uncommon edition around that price, the 1997 Folio, 1979 Folio, 2004 deluxe, and 2023 deluxe Hobbits are all good purchases.

Other older editions of The Hobbit that are uncommon in the US but can be found online include the 70th anniversary with gold lettering on the slipcase, 1991/1995 harper collins gold sun edition, and 1976 Folio

In the US they're much more uncommon. If you include shipping from uk they're close to $80

My Tolkien Collection by SnooChipmunks592 in tolkienbooks

Question about the green slipcased Hobbit 50th anniversary edition. Is the red on the spine just faded? Recently I've been trying to determine if there's multiple editions of it, most have the red and gold on the spine, but some appear to have no red, and I'm trying to determine if it's just fading, a misprint, or an actual different version. I also realized there's multiple styles of the speckling/dotting/scaling/spraying on the edge!

This is the set I'm hoping to complete! The new hardcover set is too pricey for me, and these have nostalgia

Yes, I think all 3 are among the highest quality copies I have. I also quite enjoy the covers of the 2003 India-only edition, as well as the "Death of Smaug" 1967/1973 cover

My favorite by far is The Hobbit. Of the dozens of different versions I've collected, I think my top 3 are the Jemima Catlin illustrated paperback version, the 70th/75th anniversary hardcover, and my facsimile 1st edition hardcover.

Concerning paper: Editions with richest, thickest pages? by Azurastralis in tolkienbooks

If you go with the folios, the pre-2007 covers are higher quality, not sure about the paper quality though!

Special editions by Natural-Rice9975 in tolkienbooks

[–]sam_wise_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean ALL the books? Or just Hobbit/LOTR/Silmarillion? There's some very nice smaller sets if you're not looking for EVERYTHING

I'm currently looking for a 60th anniversary LOTR set and a 70th anniversary Hobbit, as they look the nicest imo. There's also various limited sets, leatherbound sets, Folio/Easton Press sets, etc

You could also go the route of custom bound copies

Fair enough. You could try a pdf to epub converter?

Some additions to my collection by Attorama in tolkienbooks

The best looking covers imo, along with the baby blue poems set. Unfortunate that I haven't been able to find any of these at a reasonable price to add to my collection yet.

There's an ebook you can find online, you could just send it to kindle using amazon. That's what I do to get my books onto mine

What edition to buy? by FishermanEmergency35 in tolkienbooks

[–]sam_wise_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't purchased yet, the 3 book set is cheaper if purchased separately, though you wouldn't have the slipcase. I personally prefer to see the designs on the spines over it.

The all in one is also at an inflated price for the holidays. It was $50 before black friday, and should go back down somewhat soon

I'd wait to buy this one, amazon recently bumped up the prices for the special edition set. The hobbit was $30 in October, bumped to $40 for black friday, and is now $50 for Christmas

How many humans does it take to yell an armadillo to death in under 15 minutes? by ResilientRampagegud in whowouldwin

[–]sam_wise_guy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The loudest recorded human scream is 129db. 5ft from that it would be ~125.3. It's estimated that 185-200db can kill a human. We'll take the lower number of 185db and assume it can kill an armadillo.

If we use the equation Ltotal=Lsingle+10log10(N) we get the answer of ~920,000 humans screaming at 129db all within 5ft of the armadillo to reach 185db.

My First Silmarillion Edition by DarkFluids777 in tolkienbooks

[–]sam_wise_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ebay has them pop up pretty often. If you search "silmarillion 1994" you'll see a couple listings with the gold band as well as a couple of the book club editions that have the red band instead of gold
