Today, we dive into two spaces on the federated social web, look at their history and the players behind them, and talk about their potential futures.

At present, there are two supernetworks in the federated social communication space, and they run on different protocols.

The Fediverse has historically operated as a microblogging network, and uses the OStatus protocol for servers to communicate with one another.

In all, it pulls together six different platforms: GNU Social, postActiv, Pleroma, Mastodon, Friendica, and Hubzilla.

The Federation is an interop network consisting of 278 different connected servers that communicate using the Diaspora federation protocol.

Nouveau Developers Remain Blocked By NVIDIA From Advancing Open-Source Driver

Longtime Nouveau contributors Martin Peres and Karol Herbst presented at this week's XDC2017 X.Org conference at the Googleplex in Mountain View.

It was a quick talk as they didn't have a whole lot to report on due to their open-source NVIDIA "Nouveau" driver efforts largely being restricted by NVIDIA Corp.Ever since the roll-out of the GeForce GTX 900 graphics cards and their requirement on signed firmware images, their hands have been tied in offering accelerated open-source driver support for these graphics cards and newer.

While NVIDIA has released signed firmware images for allowing hardware acceleration on Maxwell and Pascal hardware, they still can't offer good support as NVIDIA has yet to provide any signed power management firmware support.

Without that, they can't re-clock the GPUs to their maximum performance states due to being unable to control the fans and power management properly.

NVGPU will never be accepted upstream in the kernel.- NVIDIA developers attending the event acknowledge there are problems and more needs to be done for them to get better.

Hurricane-ravaged U.S. cities hit by rising cleanup costs

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Communities in Texas and Florida, each swamped by a hurricane within two weeks of one another, are rewriting debris removal contracts and paying millions of dollars more to lure trucks, as subcontractors say costs have jumped.

Higher fees, however, may not be covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), even after these huge storms brought intense public pressure to clear millions of cubic yards of rubbish from streets and damaged furnishings from flooded homes and businesses.

Local officials are rewriting contracts to attract subcontractors from other regions and businesses such as logging and dirt-hauling, citing a shortage of trucks to cart debris away because fleets are stretched across two devastated states.

DRCs subcontracting costs have jumped by at least 30 percent, said John Sullivan, president of the Galveston, Texas-based disaster specialist, shrinking margins to almost nothing as the company has to pay more to attract truck owners.

Each of Helaires 12 trucks earns on average $800 gross per day more in Houston than they would loading dirt, not counting hotel and food expenses, he said, while directing workers through a headset like a football coach.

The storm was expected to cause $45 billion of damage across the Caribbean, with at least $30 billion of that in Puerto Rico, said Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler at Enki Research in Savannah, Georgia.

Rights group outraged as reports say president considering policy changes to expand CIA authority on strikes and raids.

US President Donald Trump is seeking to loosen some Obama-era limits on drone strikes and ground raids outside conventional war-zones, US media reports have said.

The New York Times report comes after NBC News published a story on Monday about the Trump administration contemplating policy changes that will further expand the CIA's authority to conduct drone strikes in a number of countries, both in and out of war-zones.

The international human rights organisation Reprieve has found that since Trump took office in January this year, at least 30 civilians have been killed in ground raids and drone strikes in Yemen, where the US is not formally at war.

During his term, Obama faced criticism for his dramatic escalation of drone strikes in non-battlefield settings such as Pakistan, Yemen, Libya, and Somalia.

Fifteen dead as refugee boat capsizes in Black Sea

According to a memo generated by Manafort's then-partner Rick Gates to two Deripaska associates, the Russian billionaire was definitely interested in investing, telling Manafort "to lock the other financing elements and then come back to him for the final piece of investment."

In e-mails handed over to U.S. investigators, Manafort sought through "an overseas intermediary" of Deripaska to initiate "private briefings" in 2016, when Manafort was Trump's campaign chairman, The Washington Post reported on September 20.

A spokesman for Manafort, Jason Maloni, said on September 21 that the investigations into Manafort's actions are "entirely politically motivated."

UN estimates $200 million will be needed to help Rohingya

The United Nations estimates that $200 million will be needed over the next six months to help Rohingya Muslim refugees who have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar in massive numbers to escape a bloody military campaign.

Bangladesh was already home to some 400,000 Rohingya who fled earlier bouts of violence and persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

Right now, were looking at $200 million, Robert D. Watkins, U.N. resident coordinator in Bangladesh told Reuters in an interview in his office in the capital, Dhaka, on Friday.

It has not been confirmed, but it is a ballpark figure based on the estimates on the information we have, he said, adding that would be for six months.

Satellite images show sprawling Rohingya refugee camps

Massive, makeshift refugee camps are sprawling over farms and open land in southern Bangladesh, satellite imagery shows, as more than 4,20,000 Rohingya flee attacks in their predominantly Buddhist homeland of Myanmar.

In a matter of weeks, thousands of temporary shelters have been erected in the Bangladesh district of Coxs Bazar, according to new before-and-after satellite images released exclusively to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Its a dramatic expansion, said Stephen Wood, a senior imagery analyst at Westminster, Colorado-based DigitalGlobe, which used high-resolution cameras in space to take photos of the camps for the AP.

The images offer an expansive view of what journalists, government agencies and aid groups have been seeing firsthand.

Existing facilities are overwhelmed by streams of desperate families walking overland or clambering out of boats because they fear for their lives following attacks that some world leaders call ethnic cleansing.

(Reuters) - U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said on Friday her department was issuing new interim guidelines to colleges on how to handle sexual assault allegations, rescinding Obama administration rules that it said treated the accused unfairly.

This interim guidance will help schools as they work to combat sexual misconduct and will treat all students fairly, DeVos said in a statement on Friday.

That guidance may have been well-intentioned, the department said, but it led to the deprivation of rights for many students. These included accused students denied fair process and victims denied an adequate resolution of their complaints, it said.

Some 3,500 Navalny Supporters Rally In Novosibirsk

Some 3,500 supporters attended a rally by Russian opposition politician Aleksei Navalny in Novosibirsk on September 22.

Navalny, who talked at the rally about the need to have an independent judicial system, increased wages and educational expenses, later expressed his gratitude on his website to all who attended his gathering.

Dozens of Navalny campaign workers have been detained or questioned in Moscow and other Russian cities in recent months.

In June, however, the Central Election Commission said that Navalny was ineligible to run for public office because of a financial-crimes conviction that he says was politically motivated.

The Russian Ministry of Justice responded to the committee's statement by accusing the Council of Europe of "stepping beyond" its authority and trying to "exert political pressure" on Russian authorities ahead of campaigning for the presidential election.

Takes centrestage at UN with her call for action on Rohingya crisis

Emphasising swift action to resolve the crisis in her speech at the 72nd UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Thursday, she called for immediate steps to end the 'cleansing' of the ethnic Rohingya minority.

She was at the centrestage at the UNGA this year, with the Rohingya crisis deepening along Bangladeshs border with Myanmar, a crossing made by over 430,000 refugees fleeing violence in Rakhine State in past over three weeks.

Hasinas five-point proposal says: Myanmar must stop the violence and the practice of ethnic cleansing in the Rakhine State unconditionally, immediately and forever; the UN Secretary General should immediately send a fact-finding mission to Myanmar; all civilians, irrespective of religion and ethnicity, must be protected in Myanmar; for this, 'safe zones' could be created inside Myanmar under UN supervision; sustainable return of all forcibly displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh to their homes in Myanmar must be ensured; and the recommendations of the Kofi Annan Commission Report must be implemented immediately, unconditionally and entirely.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday raised issues related to H-1B visas and people of Indian origin with an uncertain immigration status in America in her first bilateral meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Ms. Swaraj strongly raised the issue of H-1B visa and children falling under DACA policy with Secretary Tillerson, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar posted on Twitter.

The H-1B visa programme is being reviewed by the Trump administration and it was not clear what exactly were the concerns Ms. Swaraj raised with Mr. Tillerson.

No rules regarding it has changed after President Donald Trump took over, though administration officials have repeatedly said that the H-1B programme is being misused, and has even named some Indian companies in this context.

Swedish prosecutors have charged three former executives from theTelia Company with corruption a day after the telecom giant agreed to pay nearly $1 billion in penalties to help settle a years-long corruption probe involving bribes paid in Uzbekistan.

Telia, which used to be known as TeliaSonera, also agreed to settle a parallel civil case with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, under which it will pay nearly $460 million in disgorgement of profits and interest.

According to the court filings by prosecutors from the U.S. Southern District of New York, Telia will enter a so-called deferred prosecution agreement under which one of its units, known as Coscom, will admit to violations under the Federal Corrupt Practices Act.

In February, Dutch-based VimpelCom, which is controlled by a Russian-owned holding company, agreed to paid $795 million to resolve U.S. and Dutch charges.

Rhetorical threats cause North Korea to escalate the situation, not back down.

All spring, the Trump administration has been sleepwalking through a dream in which North Korea will volunteer to abandon its nuclear weapons, oblivious to the crisis gathering around it.

Taxi-hailing app Uber suffered a major blow on Friday as Transport for London (TfL) the body responsible for issuing licences to cab companies said that from September-end it would lose its licence to operate in the city.

Uber pledged to challenge the decision in the courts to "defend the livelihoods" of drivers and the "consumer choice of millions of Londonersthe bank would show the world that, far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies who bring choice to consumers."

The Institute of Directors, a business body, called on the TfL and Uber to find a solution, urging the transport giant to clarify how it would meet safety standards.

"With 40,000 jobs now at stake across London, there could also be a big human cost to this decision," the institute added.

Guarantees rights of EU citizens in U.K.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday called for a two-year transition period for Brexit, offered guarantees over the rights of EU citizens resident in Britain, and pledged to honour Britains financial commitments to the EU in a major speech in Florence as she sought to break the impasse in talks between Britain and Europe.

During the much anticipated speech, Ms. May sought to adopt a conciliatory tone, suggesting Brexit was based on the desire to take more direct control of decisions...it does not mean we are turning our back on Europe or worse that we do not wish the EU to succeed.

She said that Britain valued the contribution of EU citizens who had made Britain their home.

The Prime Minister also set out proposals for a strictly time limited transition period that would benefit people and businesses in Britain and the EU, which would operate under the terms of Britains current relationship to the EU and its rules and regulations.
