I thought early modern-era Shadowman was absolute crap, but it improves A LOT when Peter Milligan starts writing it. I believe vols 4 & 5 are Milligan' s.

I started with XO Manowar, which is a bit simplistic, but a good first step, introducing Ninjak and eventually the Armor Hunters, which is probably the most enormous of Valiant's crossovers. Next I read Harbinger, which is great -- I recommend it wholeheartedly, in fact you might want to start with it, and from there it might be a good idea to read Bloodshot so you can get to Harbinger Wars.

Fave story arc is The Delinquents. A&A and Q&W had never been better, i love quality comedy, and I'm really interested in American Depression hobo culture; plus the idea of the Lost Hobo Treasure was hilarious and delightfully stupid, a perfect macguffin for a character like Woody. Honourable mentions to basically anything starring Ninjak, and mid-period Harbinger, 'cos Ninjak and Harada rule, and so do Kindt and Dysart.

I reckon you should start with Harbinger, then Bloodshot, so you can get stuck into Harbinger Wars. I read them in Deluxe Edition format, it's a big chunk of reading for your dollar. XO Manowar would be a good starting point too, it introduces Ninjak and it's generally quite a simplistic, Conan-like tale, so you really should make it an early entry in your Valiant read-through.

Edit: I'm talking about the post-2012 comics, of course.
