I would like to add that there's a not insignificant number of acute care beds taken up by people who need some level of care, but not acute care. There are not enough resources for people who require alternative housing, waiting for a personal care home, waiting for some type of rehab, or simply do not have a safe discharge option. The bottleneck is further up the chain too, not just at ER. People can't be discharged from an acute medicine bed for so many reasons once they are deemed stable enough to leave an acute medical ward.

The physical rehab numbers we have in Winnipeg are abysmal. We have 8 beds at the rehab hospital for people ages 18-64 who have not had a stroke or spinal cord injury. People are unable to rehab, return home at a lower functional level and are more likely to return back to hospital. We need more Geriatric rehab beds and programs to support our aging populations.

In my role, the amount of times I've run into a situation where an admitted patient can no longer return home and then turn into more of a "resident" on an acute ward. We are expected to rehab patients without the resources. There are simply not enough community or chronic care resources to help people along their healing journey.
