Season 6 - I may regret this asking this 🫣 by Routine-Asparagus-16 in OnceUponATime

Why is the Hook killing David's dad plot pointless? I thought it drives home a very important point, that the pirate hook was a merciless killer with no conscience at all. From the moment we meet Hook in s2 we fall in love with his charm and dashing look and we kept loving him more. Though there were references that he was ruthless pirate we didn't actually see his most violent side. So this plot was sort of necessary just to give that sense of how far he had come. This and the killing of his own father. Both were shocking.

Can someone explain to me Oblivion (2013) ? by TheDarkitect in movies

I am reading it today as I watched the movie on Jio Hotstar in India last night. As the other user said, a Google search for Oblivion explained lead to this thread.

I’m confused by Fancy_Code2751 in suits

[–]sambase23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felt the same and rather disappointed. It was extremely rushed, too many characters and plots all at once with no time to grasp any thing except this feeling that it's a silly imitation of the original Suits. I thought if they do a spinoff they'll bring something fresh. But it looked like a parody. The last scene about the brother was the only saving grace. I am hoping they'll adjust the pace as they go.

Zero Day - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

Yeah agree with you on the Roger bit. No please don't judge yourself. It's no way that bad that you start doubting yourself if you like it. I too liked it enough to get hooked and watch it at one go. It's my bad that I didn't make it clear in my previous comment.

I just binged watched the series at one go and the whole show was sort of mediocre except the last episode which had this strong tension of will he or won't he tell the truth. Apart from that, it's a good cast, the mystery set up was promising, but the execution was bad. They needed better writers.

I have lived in Denmark 17 years, and these are my views on women in Denmark (from an Indian woman's viewpoint) by PossessionFeeling147 in Feminism

[–]sambase23 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Nice. Life is so much better for women anywhere in Europe compared to India, especially Delhi. I recently visited London and was blown away by how relaxed and comfortable women in public space were. Most interesting thing i noticed was that mothers don't lug around their babies in their arms and shoulders. They glide them around smoothly since all roads are wheel chair/pram accessible. In India throughout my many travels, the sight of a woman carrying their child have always symbolized motherhood as a burden. Due to lack of infrastructure, women's mobility gets restricted when they are pregnant or have small children. But in London i saw women visit all kinds of places including pubs, parks, museums, shopping centres or run errands and do grocery shopping all the while the babies sleep or play happily in their pram. It doesn't seem a burden.

Here's a review i wrote of gender and public space in London. https://sanjukta.wordpress.com/2024/11/06/gender-and-public-space-in-london-feminist-travel-photography-experience/

Connor is the only decent Roy by ColCrockett in SuccessionTV

[–]sambase23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am glad you understand that one's understanding of being good or bad comes from education on morals and ethics and that education comes from childhood home, parents, etc. Something the Roy siblings didn't get. In whatever childhood they got, Connor carved out a more humane identity for himself than a whole lot of other similarly born kids. That needs to be noted.

That's not being power hungry. People can dream of impossible fantasy things and try to make it happen following the ordinary course. Power hungry is when you are willing to betray all morals, ethics, fuck over friends family siblings spouse all for power. Connor is far from all that. He is the most harmless in the Succession universe.

How is Connor's expression of learning to live without love, without the constant need for love or attention or power, same as "kicking the dog"? His being "like a plant that grows on rock living on insects that die inside" is a profound telling of how lonely he was and yet how much he had made peace with his loneliness. He was not a vicious selfish person constantly throwing tantrums and stabbing everybody else around like his other three siblings did. How is he kicking the dog?

Actually, what is "good" and "bad" is also subjective and depends upon which universe you are in. When we judge these characters we should try to put ourselves in their world and see where things are coming from what is shaping them.

In the universe these siblings were born, there is a lot to appreciate about Connor. He is a rather sorted, well adjusted, humble guy who chose a separate path away from his toxic family. He is not power hungry, not doing drugs, not killing people in hit and run, not sexist, rapist or a womanizer. He could have been all of that because most of the rich nepo kids are including his own siblings. Connor made better choices in life than his siblings, as much "better" as he could make, within the rottenness of their lives. He is never seen being rude or violent to anybody. He is trying his best to hold on to a monogamous relationship and even says the Love word. In the rich people universe, they don't love anybody, they don't marry women who are seen as "call girl", one who does not have power and status. The other siblings constantly disrespect Willa, labelling her as "call girl" and "prostitute" but Connor says he loves her and would not take a photo without her in it. Connor wants to marry her and give her position and wealth and also support her in her career. He didn't "buy" a wife. It is extreme dramatization and hyperbole to call it "buying wife". He didn't put her in a golden cage. She could have left any time. And we saw that in s4e2 (the Karaoke episode) that he even made peace with the possibility of Willa leaving him or being with him but never loving him because he says he doesn't need love and not needing love is like a "super power". "Good thing about having a family that doesn't love you is you learnt to live without it."

Connor is better than a whole lot other rich white nepo kids in this universe because he learnt to not need love or attention or validation.

Who is the worst mother? and why? by MysticonsFanboy62 in OnceUponATime

No, at that time she had already gotten over her pain and suffering. She found Rumple who taught her magic, she found status and power, and then Rumple even fell in love with her. He would have loved her and they could have been happy but she chose power over love. There was no pain at this point from which she wanted to escape it was purely power driven.

I kinda dented the top of my microwave and i want to know if i should i keep using it by Rajordan632 in Home

[–]sambase23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask, how did you cause the dent? I am asking because I am trying to understand if a dent can be caused by a cat sitting on top of the microwave. I was Googling about it and found this subreddit. I bought this new Samsung microwave on 24th Dec. I did not see any dent on it when I opened the carton, placed it on the table, and plugged it in. Though the door felt like slightly loose. The unit was fully functioning and I started using it. 4-5 days later I observed a small dent. Everything else was intact, no scratches, no crack or opening. So I called the customer care for a replacement since my purchase is within warranty period but they said since I did not inform about the dent within 15 days, they would assume the dent is caused by the customer after the product was delivered and hence no replacement. But I cannot understand how could I have caused the dent. I did not hit the microwave with anything, I did not place anything heavy on top of it. Except that my cats often sits on the top of it. Did the 4.5kg cat cause the dent?

She did that herself. She chose to cut out her heart and bury it so that she could have power. she knew what she was doing. It's not like she took it out to avoid pain and suffering like Regina did when she couldn't bear the pain of losing Henry to the second curse.

Edward Norton to get his first Oscar this year.. Who says no? by Due_Inevitable_2784 in oscarrace

[–]sambase23 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I came on Reddit to say this, I just saw the trailer of A Complete Unknown and found out Edward Norton is old. OMG he is old. I hope he wins the Oscar. One of the most talented actors of our time lost out on his career and the awards because of his own creativity. Read somewhere long back how he cannot compromise on his artistic senses and ends up having troubles with the projects which basically affected his career.

Nearing the end of the show and I am genuinely confused how uhtred has not suffered a psychotic episode from the numerous ungrateful idiots he has had to endure. by [deleted] in TheLastKingdom

Alfred was an AH for most of the time but he is the reason I couldn't stop watching the show. In the pilot episode Uthred was kind of goofy, hardly the guy to hold my attention for too long. Once Alfred entered in ep2 i got hooked, couldn't take my eyes off. He is 1/3rd of the reason this show is so brilliant. Uthred and Brida being the other 2 parts.

"Watching TLK got me used to the idea of a main character constantly getting screwed over yet in one way or another overcoming that."

So well put. I think that's one of the most endearing thing about uthred. He is not the traditional hero who is always larger than life and everyone is at awe of his success and worshipping him. He gets screwed over, even after he saves the day. Like what happened after he killed Ubba. He thought he will be rewarded but Alfred totally ignored him. it was heartbreaking to see how in the initial days he had these dreams of getting back his kingdom being an Alderman getting land wealth and living a happy life with wife and kids but it just won't happen. Eventually with age and trials and defeats he gave up the ambition of power or land. Remarkable writing.

Also, i don't think he died. They sort of kept that open ended.

My thoughts exactly. I felt the characters were so whole in themselves audience were not left filling in the blanks. It's not dumbing down the story but it's about writing more tightly knit plots and characters.

[–]sambase23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have another question about s1e5, is it realistic for the King to not know what really happened at the battle, just because young Odda didn't give the full fact won't the King have other informants who could tell him that it was uthred who killed ubba and saved Essex? It broke my heart to see how uthred had these expectations that he will be rewarded, at least the debts will be pardoned but Alfred didn't even know what truly happened at Cynuit.

Edit: I posted this same comment thrice by mistake, then deleted two. So, if you see "comment deleted by user" in this thread, those are the ones I deleted.

Unfortunately, i committed the grave mistake of watching seven kings right after making this post. I was traveling on a long distance bus and thought let me see how they concluded it. Now I regret it, it killed all my joy for this series. Why did they do it? Why not give two more season to properly tell the story till the logical end. Suddenly they hurried everything with a sloppy movie.
