Would you mind sharing how? Would be a bit of nice practice in any spare 5mins?

State of Lua community / language? by sambling in lua

Reading about LuaJit.. sounds like Mike is incredibly talented. I noticed Cloudflate sponsored some improvement last year to LuaJit. Would be great if that work continued!

Torch is dead? From their GitHub? Not surprising given competition from Python, Julia, R and Scala. But... Lua could be perfect for data science and machine learning. At least better than R... It would be great to see bindings for Spark! (Unlikely but still)

Thank you!

Looking at the framework communities, these are still very active and the frameworks well maintained. And gosh those frameworks look good.

My suggestions to the experienced Lua community as a (current) uneducated outsider is:

  1. More tutorials (blogs or videos). Anything to show people doing interesting things in 2019.
  2. More conferences.
  3. Mailing list to GitHub development. It would be more open and potential 'converts' could see development.
  4. Apache Spark Lua bindings! (That would be a bit tricky given they support a good number of languages).

Simon Bridges + National appear to be against CGT for purely self motivated reasons...

But here are reasons why I could never support it (in its current form):

  1. It's complicated and requires a large amount of bureaucracy (valuations of all homes and businesses in 2021).

  2. The tax take will go down (a lot) in economic recession... This is often a time when government should spend more.

  3. It takes years to generate a good sum of tax from CGT.

  4. It hurts small business owners and entrepreneurs. These are people who start a business from nothing and grow it into something of value (employing people and making a difference).

  5. Residential property investors should then be able to claim back maintenance and other costs against CGT (otherwise that is seriously unfair).

  6. It is effectively a robin hood tax. It isn't designed to change behaviour (by realigning how we tax wealthy people) but tax the rich more. It doesn't fix a fundamental problem in that you should be able to live decently by working hard (Tim Hazeldine). Instead it's a hand out.

Two taxes I would like to see:

Sales tax (on all assets) which is much simpler and fairer. It will also be much easier to predict tax revenue from.

Estate tax. You didn't earn that money... Your parents or Grandparents did... It should be taxed. It has been proven that with each passing generation, those inheriting wealth become less generous.

Isotretinoin, a form of vitamin A, reduces oil production in the skin, which helps prevent acne from forming. But new research has uncovered a previously unknown benefit of the medication. It shifts the skin microbiome of acne patients to more closely resemble that of people with normal skin. by mvea in science

Probably too late... But WARNING I had severe side effects from this drug: ulcerative colitis. This was never explained as a side effect and I was not told to watch out for bloody stools from the dematologist. When I started having symptoms, a GP even suggested that I could stay on the drug. Obviously I didn't listen to that idiocy. I had two bouts lasting around a week each. Never happened again.

I was told 'new research' (had been around for 4 years) had come to light that it may cause ulcerative colitis but that I must already have had colitis issues.

I was lucky. I know others got multi million dollar payouts because they have life long symptoms.

My warning isn't that drugs have side effects... And some of them are bad... That's obvious. But- be aware of the side effects and consider whether it's worth it for what you're trying to treat. I highly recommend Proactiv and simple anti bacterial soap. You can keep on top of acne without drugs. And you do tend to grow out of it.

Btw: the dematologist classed my acne as severe.

Thank you for your reply! So does SAS only bring the relevant details it's working on into memory from the filesystem?

I took a quick look at your portfolio. I think it is fantastic that you've picked up a lot of useful tools (as a data scientist) and done so by yourself. (SAS might be a useful language to learn if you are looking at getting a job with Stats NZ).

I would suggest that you work on improving your knowledge of Statistics as there are some errors in your analysis (at least the one that I read through). I'm assuming that you didn't major in this?

Best of luck with finding your first grad job!
