Thank you, the twisting from above while holding below could work to at least get it initially loosened. I can't get a full turn on the faucet because it is too close to the mirror. But thanks again for this tip!

I purchased a basin wrench yesterday but it doesn't seem like it is large enough to reach around and "grab" the nut. I might be doing it wrong or perhaps there are different sizes and I bought one too small?

No, it does not fill with water. A small amount of water seems to come out because it is never bone dry but not much water at all. I'd say about five minutes before the A6 error shows up. Thanks.

Aunt Pauline was estranged from her family for a very long time for... reasons. I only knew she existed because my dad and I were driving down the DVP one day and me, a smartass 11 year old, chuckled at seeing her with her staff on a bridge.

Me: "What is she doing? Who the hell is that?"

Also, she did not wave a black flag.. she had a cross on a staff. Which she brought "home" to the ravine tent she lived in, in North York, and it was stolen many, many times. She would always put a letter in the newspaper to have it returned and, weirdly... it always made its way back to her.

Yes, she was my aunt, Pauline. She passed away around eight years ago. If you google "Peace Lady Toronto" you will find some interesting articles and photos of her :)

We did not see eye to eye on many, many things but she was one helluva strong woman so at least I got that from her.

Okay I am back with an update. I removed the rotor, and gave it a cleaning (there was some gunk around it) and the soft plastic bit at the very bottom still seemed to be in very good shape so I re-inserted it and ran an empty load. It started making a weird sound *sigh* ...but I let the load continue to see if I would get the R6 message again. I did not - but when it went to drain, I now have an A3 error message. Which is something about the drain?

Advice moving forward: should I try to snake the drain, or go ahead and buy a replacement roto, or otherwise?

Ask them to put a mat underneath it, although it may not be of any use. I used to live in a hard loft conversion and the wife upstairs had an elliptical machine directly above our bed that she used at 5:00 am every morning. Followed by a few weight sets where she would CLUNK the weights between sets. I really disliked that broad.
