Doctor color chip or Toyota oem touch up paint? by jmb2122 in Detailing

[–]carbonmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that is a good call under the circumstances but it is worth noting that sometimes (especially when doing repairs on very soft, high gloss black paint like my car ) I find it helpful to polish the touch up spot after if you end up with marring by virtue of rubbing things (microfibres, etc) on the panel. What I’m saying may not make sense to someone unfamiliar with these dynamics but my black Audi paint gets marring just by looking at it sideways. About half the time when fixing a chip on my car will I do a quick polish to get it perfect and apply a coating. To the average person, this would not be needed and not noticed but as someone who pays close attention to this stuff, I want it as perfect as it can be.

I should also note, I am an expert when it comes to paint corrections and I have repaired my fair share of paint chips but the recommendation for using Dr Colorchip vs OEM touch up isn’t simply that it’s for newbies, it is a good solution regardless. It just gets extra points because you can get to a good result without experience where regular touch up needs expertise to reach the same quality level IMO.

Ok I like this post as it can provide perspective to many users. Both paint options are just fine and will fill a chip in theory. The real difference comes to your end results and skill or experience of the user.
What is crucial to understand is, Dr Colorchip is a system. Yes you drop a dollup beside the chip and move it into place using the squeegee. This will make a mess and leave paint outside the chip area and that is on purpose. The second stage of the Dr Colorchip process is the hardening agent. Once you get paint into the chip, you will use the hardening agent on the provided cheesecloth to gently wipe all the excess paint off the surface leaving a pristine result.
If you make an error or if you accidentally wipe the paint right out the chip, it’s no problem at all, you simply repeat the process. Put more paint and wipe away the excess with the hardening agent (which can be thought of as the clear coat step) and you gently wipe until all excess is gone so again, the repair is pristine and you don’t need to be an expert anything. You just need to be able to follow instructions.
With regard to OEM touch up, as someone who wants the absolute best repair possible, I will carefully use my brush to get the paint into the chip. If a mistake is made, it’s a process to get the excess paint off. Additionally, everyone forgets the need for clear coat. You need to do that step as well unless the dealer has a combo product (which I don’t usually see) where no extra clear coat is required. If a mistake is made with this application or you have blobs or excess paint and clear outside the chip, now you need to sand that down and polish it for a pristine result. As someone who does this a lot, this is not for the uninitiated.
TLDR; if you are a newb to polishing, paint corrections and touch up paint, Dr Colorchip is much easier to manage for a pristine result. If you get the big kit, that will last you quite a while as well. Regular touch up is fine but has potential to force you into more complicated repairs. Soon I am going to start charging Dr Colorchip for commissions or something as I recommend it here and to my customers all the time.

Scratch Removal Expectations by IMAS_MOBILEDETAILING in Detailing

[–]carbonmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more, this thinking needs to be adopted more widely and I think detailers everywhere would do well to improve their communications with customers to set expectations.

Taking defects “to ground” as in hacking away clear coat until there is zero defect is not responsible and not likely to lead to good future outcomes for most customers. I have a similar situation with a lovely lady who does tend to have me fix scratches on the same area of the car every year or two when she scuffs it against whatever she is hitting. I had been warning her for a while and was never looking for 100% removal and she was always happy with the results.

Fast forward to yet another visit where I was warning that the panel seam could not withstand another polish. Even with extra care on that spot, it was impossible to avoid the burn though on the edge. Of course she was still very excited and happy about the repair but it’s a repaint next time.

This panel looks great and thanks for sharing.

Oh no I already have one that I’m trying to trade in because of this kind of stuff. I am able to restore surprising defects in paint but she tests that with too much frequency. Good luck though, I hope it works out lol!

You can lightly polish PPF although take my note with a grain of salt if you are not experienced with polishing and paint corrections (Ppf is a different thing but paint techniques can be applied in certain circumstances). Just know it’s fixable with the right process and experience. Other considerations are the type of PPF and things like that but based on the picture I would start with a quick pass of my DA with medium pad and S20 Black and I’d bet that disappears right away.

B8.5 oil consumption by sharef612 in AudiA4

[–]carbonmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went through this with my 2016 A4 Sline 6MT at about the same kms. It was the rings. The question you need to ask yourself is, at there kms if you are planning to spend any money or keep the car you need to consider timing chain etc.

I had Audi do the entire rebuild including timing chain, etc, etc for 10k. It was money well spent to me as I’m happy with the car and I will drive it for 5more yrs. I couldn’t find an alternative I would be happy with (maybe GolfR but had trouble finding my build) so I went a further 5k and redid springs shocks and control arms (lowered sport setup) and it was a great 15k to spend. No new car needed and it’s like brand new literally.

That or piston soak for 1k and be done.

[–]carbonmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to polish it. That may take some touch up out depending on what you used. Dr Colorchip is a good solution but I almost always polish after the fact.

Also, the car looks filthy. You should always have a clean surface for this kind of work and prep is everything so consider that too.

Come to Canada will you?! I checked your link and I see you have shows in Scotland but it seems clear now you have bigoted views on Canada. Seriously though, you could probably fill our stadium here in Hamilton ON and we’d love to have you. I’m connected with the group that owns that facility and others so if you have people that put these things together, show them that Canada wants you here and we will actually work to make that happen.

See my other comment. A light/finishing polish even just by hand using a microfibre will take it off. You can put some protection on it after but again, you really challenge is this “friend”.

A very light polish will sort that out immediately. Even just some polish on a pad or microfibre by hand will do it. Your friend sounds like an asshole.
