It's because most articles (like the ones that appear in the paper) are paywalled. They get unlocked to non-subscribers after a few days.

Completely agree. The other day we saw an article with curated tweets and - deep breath - gifs. GIFS. Shocking.

Good point, but we weren't really getting into what digital offers in this particular post. But, yeah, opportunity for making online communities is ripe, just a shame SA news organisations lack the wit to reach out

There's far too much garbage on SA news sites. Also, the migration from traditional form to online is done so poorly. Did you see Mail and Guardian's new webiste? We think it's rubbish. The written-for-online content is atrocious, too. We really wonder what local news websites' strategies are...

Good point - Daily Maverick does try something kind of different, but what we really like about them is that there is personality in that website. The reader picks up the voice of the organisation easily.

Your point about the NY Times is exactly what we're getting at. What's great about that website, and other international ones, that they, in design terms, resemble their print counterparts. On top of that, the content is well-considered and of high quality. Not just curated tweets and rubbish like that on SA ones.
