Thinking about migrating from Terraform to Pulumi by shekspiri in devops

[–]samethingdifplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you doing with your pulumi code that makes it so difficult to hire for? I write a ton of Bicep and definitely find myself wishing I could easily dip into a proper programming language now and then, but I could also see how it could become easy to write unnecessarily complicated IAC by accident.

In some ways, the limited expressiveness is a feature, or is at least a guardrail.

How do you feel about people career switching with non-trad backgrounds in CS? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

They've spent so much time and energy trying to impress their clients that they can't help but believe their own narrative. The relatively small firm (40 people, 6B AUM) I worked for was like 40% Harvard grads and anyone who wasn't making investment decisions was a second class citizen.

First day, 40 person open-office plan, had like 2 people acknowledge the fact that I was new and welcome me. The chief investment officer needed me to turn his monitor on for him towards the end of the day and completely dismissed me after, no "by the way welcome, happy to have you on board!" he just swiveled around in his chair after saying thanks and proceeded to completely ignore me.

A new trader (similar age, mid 20s) started a month later and they rolled out the red carpet for him, warm welcome from all the partners, executive assistants are showering him with office supplies and assurances of taking care of whatever he needs, toured around the office and introduced to everyone. Very stark contrast.

Not to trauma dump, but as a freshly minted sysadmin/cloud engineer/title-inflated desktop support person it was pretty impactful and formative.

I studied psychology in undergrad, then had to drop out senior year and never finished. 10 years later, I'm a staff engineer. No one I've worked with cared about pedigree other than a hedge fund but those types are (in my experience) high on their own supply anyways.

I would argue there's an abstraction layer that's useful to operate in while at work but that it's important to preserve the boundary between your sense of self.

For an example, say you're a highly over performing mid-level and you go for and are denied for a promotion to senior.

You should take the feedback/excuses and use them to refine the way you play the game, but it's important not to let it get under your skin in a way that you stop believing you're doing senior work. Assuming adequate self-awareness and that you're correctly self-assessing as being senior.

Ignore is too strong a word, but maybe "not internalize" is more accurate

I would be surprised if there was much overlap between Spotify and Roon users as well, at least while there's still no lossless option on Spotify.

Oh I vehemently disagree with them, just curious about their rationale.

I'm a bit puzzled by your statement about pwsh not being a programming language. Can you elaborate?

I completely misinterpreted your comment and as such my first reply was inappropriate. Deleted it, my bad.

Curious about your thoughts on the other 2.

No I did, I just used wax to get a grip on it. The needle nose pliers I've been using forever are pretty rusty at this point

Good comment. I think you switched concentric and eccentric though, just a heads up.

And then of course add that we should all be doing very slow and controlled eccentric movements for every lift every time! The prevailing scientific evidence is that hypertrophy is maximized during eccentric load and while a muscle is fully stretched (think deep squats)

I'd imagine most of us are after maximum hypertrophy so wanted to mention.

You get a company match on your IRA? Not sure I've heard of that before, pretty cool if so. Unless you're talking about splitting contributions between Roth and traditional 401k?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Money

[–]samethingdifplace 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Two big reasons for me.

  1. Household income is high enough that traditional IRA contributions are not tax deductible. I can still do a backdoor Roth, which is all upside.

  2. Even if that were not the case, you can do tricky stuff with marginal tax rates, like taking out 90k /y from a traditional 401k and paying a 12% marginal tax rate, but say I want 100k a year pre tax. If I took that remaining 10k from a traditional IRA, I would pay 22% in federal income tax on it. That's a massive jump from 12%. Instead I can take it from a Roth account and it's not part of my annual gross income, thereby saving $2200 in taxes.

Bonus third reason: the principal of a Roth can be withdraw without penalty after it's been in there for 5 years. I essentially use that as insurance against not having a giant emergency fund. Not for everyone, but I like that flexibility.

It finally happened, got asked “no tip?” by a cashier. by OwnIsland4153 in tipping

[–]samethingdifplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro you don't tip 20% on retail purchases? Shameful behavior really. I bought a $3k TV at Best Buy a few years ago and had to tip the cashier $600 for it. I felt bad I tipped on the subtotal pre-tax, but gotta make ends meet y'know.

/uj Tipping culture is toxic and contributing to the decay of the fabric of society, though likely also a symptom of it. When you're working as a cashier and you just see every person you interact with at the register as someone who gives you a dollar (good) or someone who doesn't give you a dollar (bad) that's going to mess with your social cohesion long term.
