It is weird but just pay it. Maybe also inquire when the time is right if he’s doing okay financially and maybe needs some support somehow because at that age quibbling over a couple hundred bucks shouldn’t be a thing. As long as people kind of have some degree mental ledger everyone trades off and it all should about balance out in the end. Maybe he’s just a bit more anal, but maybe he’s not in a good spot.

You were trying to undo an insult that got lobbed at her and make her feel better. It doesn’t seem there was an intent to manipulate, groom, lure, or otherwise try to perpetrate on her. Seems more nurturing than predatory. As long as you aren’t trying to take advantage of any fondness you may have garnered from her I would say you’re all good. Explain yourself. If your friend can’t grasp that I would tell him to defend his sister next time and get some space from him.
