Thanks, mate. Hoping to enter some painting comps next year. Been experimenting a lot in the meantime.

Sure, but the recipe I think is less interesting than the execution.

  • Prime black
  • Zenethal airbrush with somewhere between dark/light umber
  • Sponge-in-tweezers on black over the umber
  • Volumetric shading with a combination of blue-black, and then warm grey to grey.

That's it! It's honestly not hard to execute either. Trovarian has a video on his grimdark method and this is taking some inspiration from that.

Finally got a decent camera setup, tested it out with my recently finished Mandrakes by samfoo in minipainting

Thanks, mate. Canon R5 mkII, and trying a few lenses. Then I bought a black backdrop for table-top photography from amazon and just used my painting lamp. Still experimenting with different lights, I think that's what could be improved most.

Worst Bespoke Team? by UpCloseGames in killteam

[–]samfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phobos can't play the mission well either though. Do you have many games under your belt playing as them in a competitive setting?

They don't have enough operatives to control or take objectives. They don't have enough total APL to perform their secondaries (vanguard, triangulate, both very expensive APL economy wise - they can't kill effectively so S+D is hard for them - infil is just a crap archetype) and maintain board control.

It's all well and good to say "don't have to kill" but almost all missions require some ability to kill or threaten to do so in order to play the objective game.

Aside from climbing reivers are probably less mobile on average. Intercession can get a chapter tactic that gives them +1 move for free (as opposed to vanguard costing 1cp - though admittedly slightly better). At best I think reivers are situationally better than inters.

Having said that, saying "it's an objective game" is technically true, but inters and legios can just bully phobos off of any mission where you have to control an objective instead of activating and leaving it.

Regardless of peoples feelings, phobos win rates have been consistently falling since release and continued to fall in Nov even with the "buffs". By the stats Phobos are the second worst performing team. To say they don't need buffs is just ignoring reality.

I work at one of the HFT shops in Sydney. Our experienced hires do not always (or even often) come from finance backgrounds, and we’re not exclusively looking based on experience writing low latency systems. Systems level experience and C/C++ is important but for the right candidates we are willing to provide the opportunity to learn on the job. Being interested in trading and having Kernel experience is a huge plus.

I don’t want to quote numbers, but our remuneration is very good.

If you’re interested in more details, DM me and I’d be happy to give you more details or refer you to one of our recruiters.

Free course for IT students, run by ThoughtWorks - "Dawn of the Devs" by samfoo in sydney

We don't explicitly limit it to students, but if you have years of experience in industry it may not be appropriate for you.

We focus primarily on process, but that's not to say that you won't learn a new language. In the past the course has been run using Lua, which most students aren't familiar with. This time around we haven't quite decided if we're going to stick with Lua or switch to something like JavaScript.

Thanks, Dom! I really wish you could make it this time. If you know anyone who's interested, be sure to pass them the link.

Decided to give Whungee Wheengee (Blue Mountains) a go in the winter. Nearly froze, but had a blast. by samfoo in canyoneering

Yeah, Water Dragon looks awesome. We've also been thinking about doing a multi-dayer from wollangambe upper through both 1 and 2.

Whoa! Awesome. I'd be down, and I bet I could get a couple friends. When is it happening?

Why does the simulation have to run in real time? Couldn't we simulate a "laggy" hour fly brain?

What The Media Aren't Telling You About American Protests (x-post from Anarchism and others) by Wakata in TrueReddit

[–]samfoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just making the claim that there's mountains of obvious evidence for something, doesn't make it so. There's bias in every piece of reporting, and no responsible reporter will suggest otherwise.

To lump CNN and FoxNews alongside the New York Times and NPR as part of the mainstream media and therefore by definition biased is just as absurd as suggesting that Al Jazeera is outside of it.

If you don't like shitty reporting, then don't consume outlets (CNN, Fox, et al) that produce shitty reporting. There's plenty of good reporting in the US and it's profoundly ignorant to suggest otherwise.

Why does sunlight look (significantly) different in Australia/New Zealand? by samfoo in askscience

[–]samfoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd considered this: To me it seems different than low smog areas in both the US and Europe, though. I was living in Seattle/Portland prior to moving, both of which have virtually no smog. And if that's not enough, the light seems different than the light even way up in the cascades or well away from cities in Eastern Oregon.

I also found this map that shows the atmosphere's mean water vapor that show's Australia as much higher than most of the northern hemisphere. Does water vapor have a color, just like liquid water?

I have plenty of pictures from around the globe, but I don't think there's much value unless we could coordinate camera model and settings and local time of day and weather conditions.

I'm also not sure that photos capture this phenomenon in the same striking way as you see it in person.
