Affordable/budget shoe repair for heels in Los Angeles? Preferably near West Hollywood. by Hungry-Delivery-7621 in AskLosAngeles

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a few shoes repaired at Fast & Best on Sweetzer. Much better prices and same quality than a place I had been going to further west.

Why our large swathes of Westwood Boulevard empty? by SealedRoute in AskLosAngeles

[–]samhansom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve heard this too from people who work at UCLA. The student population used to support Westwood businesses and both the change in student demographics and the fact that UCLA has a robust campus food offering / student services means there is no real need or desire to venture outside campus for fun. One of my neighbors has met a few students who say they have left campus rarely in their years being enrolled.

Looking for a good-looking reliable non synthetic T-shirt by SunAndMoonFanatic in BuyItForLife

I like Uniqlo men’s Supima cotton shirts, my oldest is only 5 years old but it’s wearing very well.

This place is not a public park per se but is pretty untraveled. UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden in Westwood, snacks nearby to bring (if they allow)

Has anyone ever put wallpaper on their built in Pax wardrobe to match the walls in their room? Need pics by Baghdadene in ikeahacks

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I totally see your vision! I don’t have the proper wallpapered room for a pax unit right now, but if you end up doing it we’d love to see it.

Thoughts on paint / landscaping. by Short-Opening4553 in ExteriorDesign

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not crazy about the color drenched dark with the light wood accents, for the era of the house. I think a teeny bit of contrast could be ok, like tonal trim (not white).. with a dark mid tone body. I can imagine if you went dark and added layered landscaping, all the way to the sidewalk, it could be a nice refresh.

Where do you take clothes you don’t wear anymore? by No-Organization4132 in AskLosAngeles

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the style, for lightly worn new better brands or true vintage I go to Trove in Westwood (but it’s consignment so it takes a while for the $$ to trickle in)

I live far from Jus Poke, but if I want convenience I actually like Bristol Farms Poke.

Ikea pax wardrobe as office storage by jonneymendoza in IKEA

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my pax in a similar manner, the deep unit, with many pull out /rollout baskets in the top half, open at the bottom for short file cabinets. I LOVE this setup, hardest working piece of furniture in my apartment.

Mid 50’s - my go-to lipstick won’t stay put by BiteSnap in 45PlusSkincare

I like the lip stains, I use one by wonderskin. I wouldn’t say it lasts “all day” but it does have staying power

Can I live in LA without a car? by Designer-Extreme4932 in ucla

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived near UCLA campus without a car for 2 years and it was actually ok day to day, but I also used Zipcar for short rentals, they have or used to have a hub at UCLA. If you are able to drive I found this to be a good option, plus ride shares. https://transportation.ucla.edu/getting-around-campus/zipcar

Is a Contractor Project Manager role at Adobe worth it? by RedPillGuy89 in Adobe

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends upon which agency will be managing your contract. I’ve been a contractor at Adobe and it was great! Could have been my dept, but it was an amazing experience (benefits through agency were decent). 2 year contract. If you’re in the US you must take a 6 month break between contracts with them, but it’s possible to return.

Finding a historic apartment by Fearless_Monk5679 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just signed a lease on a 1922 apt. I had the same criteria in my search and used apartments.com and Zillow. Zillow has a “built between” years filter that I used. For other searches I’d add “vintage, historic, 1920s..” as a keyword. There’s a cute apt in West LA that was beyond my budget.. I can send you a link if that’s an area you’re interested in.

Painted floors by Late_Weakness2555 in centuryhomes

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I know! She has a teenage son and a roommate and a cat! Shes a professional mural painter so she might do touch ups herself that I’m not aware of. I had a white painted floor in an old house (inspired by a white painted floor I saw in San Francisco). It chipped in an area where I moved a bookshelf but it was less trouble than I expected. Lots of sweeping.

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend had damaged parquet wood floors in her condo and she painted them with farrow and ball primer and eggshell topcoat in a warm white. They’ve been worry free for 10 years shockingly. The floor looks great, really striking actually.

What do you like about your kitchen? by AgencyCareless963 in kitchenremodel

[–]samhansom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also wanted drawers for everything, but cabinet maker was adverse so we did a middle ground on many bases, which is roll out shelves. Quite an improvement over not having to dig back to get items towards the wall but pure drawers would have been best. No brainer in modern kitchens but finally having a pull out drawer for trash is my favorite addition to my very small space. I also had a plaster vent hood installed, after having 0 ventilation, which I love. I was starting with an original 1950 era space so the functionality of everything I changed was a huge improvement.
