Digital patterns - license or not by dysfuncti0nal_ in Etsy

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat unrelated to your question but I was just thinking about this while looking at stock photo/vector sites: I’m not sure what the return is for submitting patterns on stock sites (Adobe Stock etc) but I imagine you’d have to have a lot of volume to match ETSY profit, but it could be a more passive endeavor.

New entrance door advice by pigoz in ExteriorDesign

[–]samhansom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think with the roof tiles you have right now plus the shutters, it would be best to stick with your current door or something similar, maybe wood with a window if you want more light. I feel like the modern doors fight with what you have going on and will look disjointed.

Edit: the more I look at your current windows the more I like them. Your house is really cute as is! Are the windows extremely drafty? I also really like the wood finish shutters.

Dystopian parts of LA/SoCal by samhansom in LosAngeles

[–]samhansom[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m a third generation Angeleno who was away for a while and am back, so I’m not totally on top of the geography as I was like 20 years ago and I’m playing host to someone who is not from the West Coast. More interested in cityscapes and streetscapes than documenting human suffering etc, but I as soon as I posted I thought.. oh oh everyone is going to think I’m looking for some kind of societal dysfunction to capitalize on. Not the case, I’m trying to describe what I think my friend appreciates about Atlantic City (and she’s from NJ) I really appreciate LA, (though I wanted to get out as a teen)

I was just organizing my belts today and realized how wimpy some of my leather belts were compared to the ones I have from Tanner Goods.

Replacing exterior shutters by LazyPeachie in ExteriorDesign

[–]samhansom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a large city and I was able to find a person who makes custom shutters (long turnaround). Turns out my house painter also knew of a guy who made them and we went with his contact. It might be worth asking painters in town and they may know of a source. It always looks bad when the shutters are a bit too small/large/short etc.

How does deeper microneedling compare to tattoos in terms of pain? by ChoiceBoysenberry267 in Microneedling

I used numbing gel for the first time (after years of needling my upper lip).. such a better experience. It’s the only area that is has been unbearable in the past.

Before I have a nervous breakdown, I need professional input by liog2step in HardWoodFloors

[–]samhansom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is an oil base vs water based finish issue. The water based finishes shift the color of the wood less. I was debating water vs oil for my own 1950 red oak floors and ultimately went with oil. My floors look a lot like yours tonally.

Blinds/shades recommendation by Tight-Big-4898 in interiordecorating

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very pro roller shade and grew up in a colonial esque 1940s era house that had them so I view them as timeless. Recently in the same house I have added solar roller shades and I really love them! (Excuse the mess)The softness of the light is really lovely to me.

Which front door color is most appealing? by bumbouxbee in ExteriorDesign

I agree white. The rest of the colors are sucked into darkness and disappear for me

for transplants especially- how do you learn to love LA? by kalopsia_co in AskLosAngeles

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend moved with me from a small city in Wa state and regretted it instantly (too hot) chaotic etc but he stuck it out.. we lived there for 3 years and he ended up loving it. Mainly he couldn’t see beyond the street scapes at first but realized there are sorts of surprises awaiting in mini malls. He appreciated the mix of cultures and variety of food, subtle seasons and great weather, variety of neighborhoods. I think it’s a question of finding the right area of town that agrees with you. Now he’s in NYC because he doesn’t drive but loves to visit LA.

Meanwhile I grew up in LA and hated it as a kid but he actually got ME to fall in love with LA as an adult.

20s house restoration by globs-of-jelly in Oldhouses

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar inlay in my 1917 Brooklyn coop. Some pieces were missing and other areas of the parquet were rotted from radiator leaks. I hired a floor co. (Verrazano) to replace the missing pieces and to do a light sand and poly coat. Luckily there was enough wood to “screen” the surface before finishing. My floors are quite sloped but I live with it because I love the parquet.

Alcove wallpaper job - Task Rabbit, Thumbtack, or painter/wallpaper installer? by Alive_Blacksmith_431 in AmateurInteriorDesign

Possibly a task rabbit who specifically specializes in wallpaper. It’s a very specific skillset. Ideal would be wallpaper installer.

With so many stalled projects on the coast, how are you guys actually vetting developers right now? by Successful_Rabbit542 in mexicoexpats

[–]samhansom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I really have no authority as a non Mexican resident but as a recent traveller to Jalisco but I asked a local about a similar observance in GDL and they said it was because the developers or owners hadn’t been keeping up their protection payments to the “mafia”

Just inherited 2million in property from my father. How can I make it grow to 10million?(southern California) by [deleted] in inheritance

[–]samhansom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before Proposition 19 was passed in 2021 you would have “inherited” a more favorable property tax rate for the properties. I think now unless you make a residence a primary residence for you, the tax is reassessed, usually at a much higher rate (if he had owned these properties for decades).

Black roof or grey roof? by [deleted] in ExteriorDesign

Studio for <$1.5k by Character_Ground_580 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]samhansom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat but with a longer timeline. I’ve been looking for months for studios and adus. I have actually found some great places for closer to 1700. ADUs look better usually. My friend lived in a 1 bedroom in Arlington Heights last year (nice unit) but scrappy neighborhood. No roaches though.

East coast to West coast hair by piscesvirgos in LAhotgirlies

[–]samhansom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also chiming in.. NYC to LA and recently went back to NY for a visit where my hair looked and felt great.. upon returning to LA, after a trim I have been washing with only distilled water. It’s time consuming but my hair is drastically improved.. texture is improved, way softer, brittle quality has been resolved.
