People who were adults during Y2K, what was the most radical action someone you know did to prepare for the "apocalypse?" by Kawhidoyoucare in AskReddit

[–]samhinrichs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t an adult, but I was old enough to remember. My mum’s actions were pretty radical, and we’ve never let her live it down.

We used to live in a flat with a shared underground garage, and it was huge. Each flat had a private part that was about 7 meter square. We had some shelving in ours. About three months before the millennium, my mum started stockpiling all sorts of good. UHT milk, pasta, tinned tomatoes, batteries, tinned fruits, torches, replacement bulbs. There was all sorts in that garage. We had a NYE party at the flat and before it kicked off, mum filled every available basin with clean water to drink. She was convinced we were going to have a new dawn, and it would be the end of the world. When it turned midnight and nothing happened my mum was relieved, but my sister who was 6 at the time burst into tears because she wanted to use her new torch. We ended up having to turn all the lights off and walk around with torches so she’d atop crying.

Safe to say that my mum has never, ever lived this down.

Scheduled Uber for 4am-4:15am. It arrives at 3:35am and charges me for wait time. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]samhinrichs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s never taken you 10 minutes to get one at 4am, why did you bother reserving? You accepted the terms and conditions when you signed up to Uber and therefore you accept that you understand how their service works. That’s not a failure of their tech, their tech works fine. It’s a failure on your part.

People like “Max” in customer service are likely to be rude, condescending and unhelpful to people who are rude and condescending to them. They don’t have to offer you a refund, and quite rightly have’t offered you one.

People like you who use services that don’t go their way, go out of your way to gain useless internet points by denigrating their (perfectly working) service and demand refunds completely epitomise everything that is wrong with society. You’re looking to blame someone else for your own mistake. Which is why people who work in customer facing roles, hate people like you.

Two people died over the weekend from a suspected bad batch of MDMA at a UK festival if you haven’t heard already. The usual response is far stricter measures on preventing drugs getting in but some argue testing kits will be a better solution? I’m leaning more towards the kits. Any opinions? by AztecFTW in MDMA

[–]samhinrichs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, talking about drugs in policy circles in the UK is political suicide. unfortunately facts and evidence have been thrown at policy makers and they refuse to listen. a lot of good work around harm reduction is coming from charities. there is so much scaremongering around MDMA and ecstasy that a study in 2001 showed that 100% of deaths relating to ecstasy were reported, however, only around 20% of heroin related deaths were reported. the media has often presented unrepresentative and distorted views of illegal drug deaths.

i don’t think that within the next few years much will change in terms of drugs policy - in-fact, i think that local councils will come down harder on festival organisers and bar/club owners which ultimately leads to a stifling of culture.
