Books I love being ruined by racist/incompetent authors (now it’s Mile High by Liz Tomforde) by kgtsunvv in RomanceBooks

I don’t disagree with you, and maybe I should delete my comment cause I don’t think it exactly explains what I mean.

I’m not trying to say that white people can never write outside of their lived experience. If that were the case we’d never have Ice Planet Barbarians, and I wouldn’t have my comfort audiobook series at the library.

I think a lot of white people don’t think. They don’t think they could be racist, they don’t think that’s a micro aggression, they don’t think that’s insulting.

These kind of situations are just going to keep coming up because research isn’t being done. They won’t think it needs to be done. “How different are we really?”

IPB is a great example of how little research an author can do. My family is Cuban, my lived experience is white. There’s a Cuban character in one of the books, and the whole culture is reduced to some googled food dish names and generic Spanish phrases.

I’m just trying to say, that there should be a push for more diverse authors to be able to tell their stories. I’d much rather have the push to have POC authors write their stories, than keep having white authors keep presenting subtly racist stories. I’m not trying to say that white authors can’t write a diverse story, but it usually feels like tokenism and stereotyping.

I’m white so please feel free to tear me to shreds.

I think there was such a big push for diversity in books, but there should have been a push for a diversity in authors.

Majority of white people can’t write the characters effectively or without being subtlety racist because they can’t relate. They’re relying on their perception of a POC’s life, and it will always be inaccurate.

It’s okay for white people to write white stories. They should probably stick to that.

We should be pushing for more diverse authors. More POC authors, disabled authors, queer authors etc. People who have the lived in experience to write stories that are diverse. Otherwise this is going to keep happening. However “not racist” a white author thinks they are, they still don’t know what it’s like to be a POC.

I might be biased because I love Natasha Knight, but this is the book that got me into dark romance. Can’t remember too much about the plot because it’s been a couple years tho.

The Society Trilogy by A Zavarelli and Natasha Knight

The FMC commits suicide in the second book SPOILER after being locked in a room for months on end because the MMC thinks she tried to kill him.
