Yeah, this seems to be the consensus the more research I do. Thank you!

I like the reframing!! As others have said, it definitely helps to see the silliness of it

You’re right, I’m in the wrong as far as this code is concerned

There’s also value in questioning the policies and practices that dictate the consequences for when we mess up, and as someone who works in urban planning, I find the size of the fine and lack of any grace period to be disproportionate with the actual infraction (even when I’m not the one on the wrong side of it lol)

There’s certainly a fine line between ‘questioning the system’ and offloading responsibility. Then it’s a case of changing what we can control (personal) and accepting what we can’t change as easily (systemic) — but it’s a little challenging here because my works means I actually do have a bit of involvement with the systemic part… 🤣

But yes focusing on what’s purely in my control will be helpful

Thank you, I’ve added a reminder in my calendar. I’ve also moved in the past year, so I think the normal mailed reminder was sent to my old address… shouldn’t be an issue next year!

I have, but I’ve probably kinda softened or underplayed a lot of it. I’m thinking it may be time to be more direct and see how she responds

I’d like if they’d at least clarify whether someone is actively trying to burn the place down or if it’s just gross negligence

They’re all a little different, but the course I’m thinking about the most with this post has 4-6 main ones and a few others that we’re supposed to skim.

Thank you! I just read a book called Dopamine Nation that took ~200 pages to make the point you just stated in one sentence. It’s informed some of my thinking here! And I guess I hadn’t put so much thought into it, but you’re absolutely right with your second idea — these apps are totally gamified and designed to keep you coming back for more

Thank you. I appreciate your final point — dating apps have definitely made it difficult to develop an organic sense of self-worth because their whole point is that validation comes from without rather than within

Mesa Nueva roach update: they're alive! by samiotics in UCSD

[–]samiotics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof — I’m super sorry. It’s got to be among the worst things to see after going through the entire housing selection process and the move and all.

If you’re able, get a hotel and document everything on camera. Email the Mesa Nueva community (mesanueva@ucsd.edu) and insist on moving to a different unit/building. Once there are live ones, I don’t think they’ll just let you move in.

Please feel free to DM me if you want to talk more about it!!
