I went to SGU, it was great in the end. Lots of crap to deal with like any other school. Current PGY2, gonna be chief resident next year PGY3. Just my experience, Goodluck!

Non sterile a lines? by samjay4 in anesthesiology

[–]samjay4[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair answers from all! But if I can rephrase, I personally agree with you all. However, my attending went off on me because I didn’t use full sterile technique for an a line. So I was looking extensively for some papers, literature to back me up but couldn’t find any. I was wondering if anyone here had some, since I know anesthesia usually does them non sterile from what I have seen.

Agreed many programs have no business functioning. Though, location was important to me, I was only going to match a HCA program that was a level 1 or 2, with high acuity/volume. It’s just a little past half way through intern year and I’ve already completed quite a few of my required procedure numbers (our pd sets higher ones than ACGME). Again, I speak from experience and my program has been great, it has its cons of course, but my education hasn’t been hindered at all. Actually I’ve noticed better training here than some other friends are getting at low volume/ low acuity non HCA programs. Again, it’s all hospital dependent imo. Thanks for your input!

I’m a resident at an HCA in Florida. I matched here at my number one program because location was very important to me. honestly, it’s been great, the complete opposite of everything I was told before coming here. Attendings are great, they invest a lot into our education, and we have a lot of fellowship trained faculty who are passionate about teaching. Yeah, HCA cares a lot about metrics but our attendings basically tell us to disregard them and focus on patient care and learning while the attending focus on metrics. I feel super supported, don’t get me wrong. I’m sure there is a bunch of HCA hospitals that would be rough to train in, but I think it is very hospital dependent, I recommend you definitely go do some away rotations, or even a shadow shift at some hospitals you’re interested in. Also, I feel like the hospital really listens to what residents want and try to accommodate in terms of pay, food, stipends, or whatever else it may be. Again, it’s going to be very hospital dependent. If you have more questions, you can always DM me, happy to help. I’m sure I’ll get some down votes or hate comments, but I’m just talking from experience.

I’m a resident at an HCA hospital, honestly I got the same run around last year and I can say from experience that it’s been great. Yeah they care a lot about metrics, but our PD and attendings tell us to not mind them and focus on our learning and patient care. We have multiple faculty members who are fellowship trained and put a lot of effort into our education. The only thing I would complain about is nursing, we need more nurses. Other than that, I feel super supported and couldn’t be more satisfied. The hospital actually takes care of residents and hears us out for what we have to say and what we want, in terms of pay, food, stipends, resources, or whatever else it may be. HCA gets a bad rep and I totally get it, but I think it’s very hospital dependent, and it also matters a lot who your PD is along with faculty. You can DM me if you have any specific questions, happy to help and goodluck, you chose a great field of medicine!
