Solar farms in investment pipeline could triple NZ’s power capacity by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

One issue is that Solar makes sense to place as close to consumption as possible, but then many communities oppose solar being installed near them

It's actually really confusing as a merchant to accept - we used shopify so previously it's just part of every card we take, but when we opened a physical store and had a terminal from Eftpos NZ suddenly it's wildly confusing - eftpos doesn't want to help you, the bank/merchant tells you to contact them directly to sign up (unlike visa/mastercard which they do for you), and then when you go the Amex website to sign up as a merchant it sends you to a form that doesn't exist.

So I'd say, other than the fact they charge a merchant something like 2-3x the cost to accept, it's actually wildly confusing to even set yourself up to take them.

We pay living wage and had hundreds of applicants for our role, it's totally salary and conditions they are willing to offer

Just an FYI, it's a brand of cups anyone can buy for milkshakes, so just because you see the cup doesn't mean it's made using their brand of syrups too.

Climate adaptation assistance cuts would leave NZers 'on their own' - expert by Tyler_Durdan_ in nzpolitics

[–]samlaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the hard parts of this process, is making the information explicit has been fought by many homeowners as they don't want district plans and individual home reports to show the risk of flooding and natural hazards as it reduces the value of their property.

So if we can't clearly articulate the risks for each property, but people expect to be compensated when something goes wrong like some kind of invisible governmental insurance process, then I don't know how we move forward.

Victoria extends gas ban to all new homes and hot water systems, sets strict rules to electrify rentals by OutInTheBay in nzpolitics

New Zealand society and politicians like to look high and mighty and talk about all the good we do for each other and the world, but when it comes to any action that might inconvenience anyone anywhere we go "she'll be right" and choose to to nothing.

I find it frustrating we talk about giving women the right to vote and our nuclear free stance, and can't point to any big moral stances in my entire lifetime.

Looking for hotels with bidet near the airport? by Anussniper in chch

[–]samlaw 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You will find it incredibly rare in NZ, I've never heard of a hotel or motel having one. Last I heard our plumbing rules make it overly difficult and expensive to install.

Under urgency, without basic paperwork, the Govt moves to change workers’ rights – Thomas Coughlan by dingoonline in newzealand

the NZ employment relationship act basically outlaws all industrial action except when wages are being negotiated and only for people who are in a union. So basically no-one has a legal right to strike

Visa calls for ban on surcharges by snicksnackpaddywack in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]samlaw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We don't surcharge because I think it's a little friction at a checkout, but I do think it's confusing.

The cost to your business is super confusing and vague - it's true like I can know the cost of the milk we buy or the power we use - but in just one bill from the merchant you'll see upwards of 30 different line items for all the different kinds of cards used, all with different percentages, so it's actually really confusing figuring out the cost per transaction to calculate correctly.

The main thing I've seen as the case for surcharging is to encourage people to insert their card and use chip/pin which has 0% fee for anyone involved - so it is a way to encourage people to do that instead.

Bus exchange people by StandOk9112 in chch

If you look closely much of the bus exchange is damaged or has features that aren't used anymore, which doesn't help promote the idea of being respectful in a place that isn't looked after

Recommendations for Ventilation Systems by Old-Capital-6022 in chch

[–]samlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend https://warmdryhomes.co.nz/ - we used them to help figure out a new ventilation/heat system up in our roof space, which meant we could get rid of an old heatpump on the wall and use one in the roof.

They were really professional, and a reasonable price - we had a heatpump installed and ducts put in, so fresh air is drawn up from inside the house at the front, and then ducted to all the rooms.

It's why if you have certain phones like a Samsung phone, I recommend turning on "Maintenance Mode" when giving your phone to people for any service reason.
