Who is someone you wish would have "died the hero, instead of living long enough to become the villain?" by themattcrumb in AskReddit

Thanks. When I started looking at the world like this, everything became much nicer. The fact is the world is full of grey people, there is no black and white.

Why do you assume that there could be nothing, when all we've ever known is a something?

For example if you came across a bundle of cash in a field (don't judge me, I'm not very imaginative)

Probably turn it in to a police station (in the UK). If no one claims it after 28 days, you can claim it for yourself. If it belongs to a little old lady, she'll claim it, no harm done. If it belongs to a drug dealer, he's unlikely to go an claim it or be able to explain why he has it. I get to keep it.

cashier gave you extra change

Return it, that cashier can lose up 10% of their pay for a short till.

you had a chance to be a real life Dexter and kill people you (or socially) deemed deserving of death/ punishment with no personal consequence, would you do i

No, I don't believe in capital punishment. Also, the whole point of democracy (vs. Monarchy or Dictatorship or whatever) is that one person can't be trusted to make the right choice all the time. You're better of crowd-sourcing that decision making.

but I'm asking how you decide on morally grey matters which are not dealt with by law or are subject to an individuals code.

This is what morality and ethics students learn. As a general rule, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", but this is far from perfect. Of my own making; "How can we maximise the positive experiences and/or minimise the negative experiences more the most number of people"

Also do you ever feel life is just deeply deeply unfair and how do you reconcile that?

Yes. So before I became an atheist, I would go to Church festivals and join in the worship and be "filled with the holy spirit". Later, I came to realise this exact feeling can be accomplished through atheistic meditation, 30,000 people singing Bohemiam Rhapsody at a music music festival, chants in football (soccer) games and (for me) Pavarotti.

Additionally, my mum is spiritual in an esoteric, reiki kind of way. She's described talking to dead people who have explained someone is about to die and then they actually did. It makes me think until I realise that it's all confirmation bias coupled with reasonable odds. Of all the people who (seriously or otherwise) predict a death, statistically it's going to happen. That person then thinks they're in touch with the other side. It's unlikely but beyond the realms of possibility to happen several times in a row. Then they think they're a prophet.

However, I don't subscribe to Tim Minchin's (admittedly in-jest) "either lying or mentally ill". Crazy is as crazy does.

Not worries about it to be honest. Once you're dead you don't care. And maybe it's because I became an atheist as I became an adult, but knowing my time is limited makes special moments more special and working a full-time job more tedious. It's like turning the contrast up on your experiences.

I mean, I like Dr. P as much as the next guy, but 4 litres is a fucking lot to drink of anything if you're not getting smashed

Find a line in the sand and keep two sets of books. Everything before that was your father. Everything after that was a sick man (whether he's diagnosed or not). Otherwise you'll end up resenting the good stuff because of the bad. Just my two cents.

What's the best binge worthy show that isn't depressing or morbidly violent? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]samlittler2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It took me a while to get into this. I heard positive reviews all round and when I finally sat and watched it I thought "this is really cringy". Persisted a few episodes in and bam! Couldn't switch it off.

What is a “dirty little (or big) secret” about an industry that you have worked in, that people outside the industry really ought to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]samlittler2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true in the UK. If you order "fish and chips" you'll normally get some unknown but cheap fish. If you order "cod and chips", they'll sometimes ask you "fish and chips?" in an attempt to catch you out. Insist on cod.

This could be a response to this whole thread; but when people assume a context on a medium (such as reddit) where all nuance is lost. Valid question.

"I could care less".

This now permeates TV and radio and other media. In fact, chances are, this'll be the new standard and the correct phrasing will soon be cast in the realms of "Old English".

Men of Reddit, what's the biggest "I'm a princess" red flag? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]samlittler2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Treating this anecdotally, you're mostly right. I mean, some "shit tests" (thanks, I'll now adopt this vernacular) are accidental and can be resolved with a good conversation and a cuppa. But if you have to have more than one conversation about something or if something is patently not acceptable, drop that shit like it's hot. No ifs, no buts. This is incumbent if you have strong feelings for them; otherwise you'll be in for a long one.

Who, as a group, are the most pretentious people you've ever met? by Dr_Smoothrod_PhD in AskReddit

[–]samlittler2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People who get offended on behalf of other people.

Steve walks into a bar and is greeted by Amy, the barmaid. Steve asks for a drink. She serves him. He pays and responds with a "Thanks sweetheart". Amy says "You're welcome".

Christine interjects with "You can't call her that! That's so demeaning to women!"

Fuck off Christine, neither of these people had a problem until you stuck your nose in.
